THE GOSPEL MESSENGER
Butler, Ga., March, 1884, Vol. 6, No. 3

John W. Bartlett, son of Deacon William and Ruth
Bartlett, departed this life, after several years of
sad affliction, on the 8th of October, 1883. He was
born in Marion County, Ga., on the 10th of January,
1855, and was remarkable from childhood for truth,
reverence and obedience to his parents, so growing
up in the confidence of all who knew him. He
manifested at an early age a good business capacity
and integrity, so that his father left him, in his
last will, in charge of the family and estate. His
fathers death was a heavy stroke to poor John, for
he seemed to regard it as caused by some fault of
his, saying that his troubles were more than he
could bear, so that he could not be comforted or
quieted; and in this unsettled condition of mind he
made his escape one night and tried to kill himself
by falling from a tree, where he lay much hurt until
found by the family and carried into the house. It
was now plainly seen that he had become insane. John
was sent to the Insane Asylum, at which place Sister
Bartlett went to see him and brought him home, but
he had to be sent back and his mother said, "Good-
bye, John; I shall never see you again." He died at
the Asylum of Marasma on the date above written.
