A Difficult Operation

Drs. W.A. Drane and J.A. Weaver, assisted by Dr. T.B. Sheppard and Judge
Dunham, performed a very difficult and dangerous operation on Mr. J.P.
Armstrong last Wednesday morning.

It will be remembered that Mr. Armstrong had his left arm terribly mangled in a
gin last fall a year ago, and it was recently discovered that the bone between
the elbow and the shoulder was not united so the physicians decided to perform
another operation last Tuesday by cutting off the ends of the bones and fit
them together in order that they might unite.

It was discovered in this operation that the upper portion of the broken bone
was dead, and it was decided that this dead bone must be taken out. That was
the operation which was performed Wednesday.

Mr. Armstrong is a man of wonderful nerve and stood the operation finely,
although he has heart trouble and could not take enough anesthetics to place
him in an unconscious state. The operation lasted about twenty minutes and was
very successfully performed, though the patient was in a very weak condition
after it was over.

It is hoped that Mr. Armstrong will not have to undergo anymore such trying
ordeals and that his arm will soon heal again. He has suffered much with it,
though patiently, since it was first hurt.

Mr. Armstrong was in a very critical condition all day yesterday, and it was
feared he would not be able to survive the shock. It is the prayer of this
town that he be spared.

Mr. J.P. Armstrong Dead

Mr. J.P. Armstrong, whom we mentioned last week as being in a critical
condition after a severe surgical operation, died at 11:30 o’clock Thursday
night of last week, only a few hours after the last paper was printed.

His remains were buried at the Methodist cemetery Friday afternoon, after the
funeral services were held at the church by Rev. D.F. Riley, and the large
number of people who attended attested the esteem in which he was held in Buena
Vista.

He came here from St. Augustine, Fla., several years ago and soon won the
esteem and friendship of all with whom he became associated. During his
residence in Buena Vista no man has spoken against him. He was quiet and
reserved in his manners, honest and conscientious, and as upright in all his
dealings with his fellow man as it is possible for mortal to be.

He was a member of the Presbyterian church, but had sent for his letter to
unite with the Methodist church here. He was a model Christian man, devoted to
the church and Sunday School, and he has left an example worthy of imitation.
During all his suffering, from the time of his accident eighteen months ago
until his death, he bore it with remarkable Christian fortitude. When the last
operation was performed, and so many odds against his surviving the shock, he
remarked to those present just before taking chloroform that if he should never
wake “they would know where to find him.” He had been unfortunate since in
Buena Vista and was poor in this world’s goods, but he left a priceless
heritage to his wife and child – an assurance that he would be redeemed with
the blessed.

He was about thirty-five years old and in the prime of manhood. He leaves a
wife and little child to mourn his untimely death to whom the sympathies of the
people of this community are extended.

A committee composed of F.G. Nelson, W.M. Williams and the editor was appointed
at the Methodist Sunday School last Sunday to draft resolutions of respect on
the death of one of its best members, Mr. J.P. Armstrong.

Additional Comments:
Transcriber's note: I was unable to locate the resolutions written for J.P.
Armstrong. Apparently it was included in some of the missing issues of the
newspaper.
