The Camilla Enterprise, Camilla, Ga, 30 Jan 1925
Obituary of Elihu H. Akridge as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 30
Jan 1925. Mr. Elihu H. Akridge, aged, widely prominent and beloved citizen
of Mitchell county, passed away at his home near Pebble City on Thursday, 22
Jan 1925, morning of last week at 11:00 AM. Due to his extreme old age. Mr.
Akridge's health gave way some time ago and his family and loved ones realized
the end was merely a question of time. Funeral services were held at Akridge
cemetery Friday, 23 Jan 1925, afternoon in the presence of a large gathering of
relatives and friends. The services were conducted by I. R. Kelly, assisted by
Rev H. N. Burnett. The choir from Pelham sang sweetly the beautiful old
hymns, "Rest For The Weary," "Abide With Me,"It is Well" and "Sweet By and By."
There were many beautiful floral tributes. Mr. Akridge was one of the honored
and loved patriarchs of the county. More than eighty three years ago he was
born in this county and had spent his entire life within a few hundred yards of
the place of his birth. He possessed the valiant and indomitable spirit of the
true pioneer, to which many Mitchell countians of today are indebted, for he
was one of the builders of the county. He was happily married to Miss Nancy
Adams in early manhood and the tie remained unbroken through the years until
her death nine years ago. They raised a large family of children, all staunch,
constructive and worthy citizens, following in the footsteps of their parents.
Mr. Akridge was a man of high ideals, kindly interest in neighbors and love for
humanity, a man of simple goodness, truth and strength, and had a wide
influence for good. He was loved by numbers of friends throughout the county
and his memory will long be reverend. Mr. Akridge was a veteran of the war of
the Sixties, having served through the full four years of the war as a soldier
of the Confederacy. Surviving the deceased are the following children, Messrs.
J. B., M. J., T. E. Akridge and Miss Alice Akridge, all of Pebble City
community, Mrs. Margaret Edwards, of Hinsonton and Mrs. Laura Smith of Pine
Cliff. A deep and sincere sympathy is extended by many friends of this section
to the bereaved family in their loss.
