Family notes
Emma Dorothea Arp was born January 16, 1870 at the village of Steine, 
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany to Johan Christian Arp and Carolina Lena 
Wolgelhagen Schoel. She had five siblings:
Henry Claudius Arp (born October 24, 1867 Germany, died March 25, 1954 
Ludington, Mason, Michigan);
Herman John Arp (born January 24, 1872 Germany, died November 3, 1955 
Pipestone, MN);
Otto Christian Arp (born October 21, 1874 Germany, died January 6, 1951 
Luverne, Rock, MN); 
Carl William Arp (born December 8, 1876 Germany, died December 27, 1926 Elmer, 
Pipestone, MN); and
Richard Bernard Arp (born October 3, 1879 Germany, died October 15, 1950 
Pipestone, MN.)

The entire family left Hamburg, Germany on March 25, 1885 to emigrate to 
America. They boarded the ship "Gellert". Ship's list records show: Hamburg-
Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien Gesellschaft; Ship type: Dampfschiff; 
Accommodation: Zwischendeckwhich. After arrival at New York City, they 
traveled by train to Scott County, Iowa where they were greeted by relatives 
and then moved to a farm in Tama County, Iowa.

Emma met and married Peter Max Lorenzen on Feb 26, 1891 at Oneida, Tama, Iowa. 
Their first five children were born here, they are: 
Edna Christina (born July 2, 1891, died January 10, 1985 Luverne, Rock, MN);
Alma Caroline (born August 29, 1893, died January 18, 1990 Pipestone, MN);
Herman Christian (born April 30, 1895, died November 25, 1977 Luverne, Rock, 
MN);
Albert John (born January 22, 1897, died January 5, 1978 Pipestone, MN); and 
Walter Max (born February 27, 1899, died November 10, 1987 Trosky, Pipestone, 
MN.)
Family found in the 1900 census living at Oneida township, Tama County, Iowa. 

Emma became a naturalized citizen in 1892 at Tama County, Iowa. Sometime 
between 1900 and 1902, the family decided to leave Iowa and move to a farm 
near Jasper in Elmer Township, Pipestone County, Minnesota. Five more children 
were born in Pipestone, MN, they are:
Frank Herbert (born March 20, 1902, died April 6, 1999 Pipestone, MN);
Viola Mathilda (born October 8, 1904, died August 2, 2005 Luverne, Rock, MN);
Clara Luella (born August 22, 1907, died August 30, 1980 Edgerton, Pipestone, 
MN);
Peter Herbert (born September 29, 1909, died July 26, 1944 France (DDay, WWII);
Adella Emma (born September 29, 1909, died September 4, 2002 Luverne, Rock, 
MN). (Note: Peter and Adella were twins.)
Family found in the 1905, 1910, 1915, 1920, and 1930 censuses at Elmer, 
Pipestone, MN. 

Emma died September 21, 1957 at Pipestone, MN. Her funeral was held September 
25th at the Methodist church in Pipestone, MN. and she was buried at the 
Trosky Cemetery, Trosky, Pipestone, MN. She had fractured a limb six weeks 
prior to her death and was hospitalized for some time. 

Surviving relatives were five daughters: Mrs. Edna Strassburg, Mrs. Alma Oye, 
Mrs. Viola Kindt, Mrs. Clara Verdoes, and Mrs. Adelia Graphenteen; four sons: 
Herman, Albert, Walter, and Frank; thirty-six grandchildren and one hundred 
and one great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Peter 
Max Lorenzen and one son, Peter Herbert Lorenzen. 


Additional Comments:
Peter Max Lorenzen was born March 10, 1869 at Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He 
emigrated 1887 to Iowa, was naturalized 1892. Died February 10, 1923 at 
Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota from injuries received in a fall out of his hay 
loft in his barn. He possibly had a stroke prior to falling.  He also is 
buried at the Trosky cemetery, Trosky, Pipestone, Minnesota.
