When he was seven years old, he moved with his family to Luverne, Minnesota where he was raised and attended school. After his graduation from Luverne High School in 1940, he was employed by the A&P Food Grocery Store Company, working in several locations in Minnesota. On June 24, 1946, he was united in marriage to Lavonne Jones in the Methodist Episcopal Church in Pipestone, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they resided in Pipestone where he owned and operated the Eagle Cafe with his brother John. In 1954, they moved to Luverne, and Clarence was employed at the Rock County Bank. In 1955, they returned to Pipestone where he worked at the First National Bank for 27 years. During this time, he held several positions from agricultural loan officer to part ownership in the Key Insurance Agency. In 1979, he retired from the bank as a vice president. Following his retirement, he continued serving on the bank's board of directors until 1985. On Tuesday, November 4, 1997, Clarence died at the Pipestone County Medical Center at the age of 74 years, 7 months and 24 days. Clarence was a member of Christ the King Lutheran church in Pipestone where he served several terms as an elder. Prior to his membership at Christ the King, he had been a member of the Methodist Church and had served in many capacities. Between the two churches, he sang in the choir for 50 years. In his younger years, he was active in the Pipestone Jaycees where he served as the club president. For many years, he served on the Pipestone Housing and Urban Development Committee. While on this committee, he was chairman when the Nokomis Apartments were built and was instrumental in naming this building. He enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Pipestone Golf and Country Club. He was an avid football fan and loved woodworking as his hobby. Following his heart attack in 1979, Clarence and Lavonne began enjoying their winter months in Mesa, Arizona. They had continued to reside in Val Vista Village for the past 18 winters. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Lavonne Stavenger of Pipestone, Minnesota; four children, Dave and his wife Heidi Stavenger of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Tom and his wife Ruth Stavenger of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jim and his wife Carolynn Stavenger of Denver, Colorado, and Mary and her husband Harlan Zeinstra of Boulder, Colorado; 11 grandchildren; one brother, Vernon Stavenger of Lexington, Kentucky; and three sisters, Doris Page of Deer River, Minnesota, Marlene Cooksley of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Donna, Mrs. Roger Schiager of Gold Canyon, Arizona.
