WILLIAM HUKRIEDE, the genial proprietor of the Mansard House, the leading hotel
of Eden Valley, is a native of Westphalia, Germany, born September 4, 1838. He
was reared in that classic land, receiving in youth the education which is the
birthright of the rising generation of his fatherland. He was there, in 1860,
married to Miss Mary Christopher, a native of Westphalia, Germany, and daughter
of Henry and Lizzie Christopher. In 1873, with his family, he emigrated to
America, and purchasing a farm on section 23, in Manannah township, commenced
life here. On this place he made his home until the fall of 1887, when, in
connection with his son Henry, he came to Eden Valley and bought the Mansard
House, and has continued at the head of its affairs ever since. Mr. Hukriede has
a family of eight children, as follows: Fred, born May 28, 1861; Henry, whose
sketch is given elsewhere in this volume; Reka, born October 6, 1865; William,
born February 1, 1868; Ernest, born January 28, 1871; August, born April 15,
1873; Minnie, born March 1, 1870; and Annie, born November 14, 1878.
