Frank L. Seme Sr., 84, of Ely died Friday, June 18, 2004, at St. Mary’s 
Medical Center in Duluth.

Frank was born Oct. 9, 1919, in Ely to Anton and Louise (Shepel) Seme. He 
was a graduate of Ely Memorial High School. He served in the United States 
Navy during World War II. He married Mary Bonicatto on June 6, 1946, in 
Hibbing.

Frank was a lifelong resident of Ely and a lifetime member of St. Anthony’s 
Catholic Church, where he served as a eucharistic minister and Father 
Scheurer’s altar boy during the weekly Mass. He was a member of Ely American 
Legion Post 248, Ely VFW Post 2717, Knights of Columbus, Senior Citizens 
Club and the Disabled American Veterans. Frank was owner and operator of 
Seme’s Market in Ely until he began working at Reserve Mining Co. in 1956. 
He worked for reserve until his retirement in 1984. Frank’s great love was 
his family and especially his grandchildren. He loved hunting, traveling, 
cooking, gardening and always looked forward to deer hunting with the guys 
at the shack. Frank was a wonderful husband and soulmate, father, 
grandfather and special friend to many. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his devoted wife of 58 years, Mary; children, Frank Jr. 
“Mick’’ (Sue) Seme of Saginaw and Mary Kay (Wilson) Spence of Pike Lakes; 
four grandchildren, Ted, Malena, Nick and Janell; brother Tony (Lillian) 
Seme; sister Mary Porthan; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Louise and Franny.

Services were held Tuesday, June 29, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in 
Ely, with the Rev. James Scheurer officiating. Family services by Kerntz 
Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.
