Paul V. Salo, 85, of Virginia, formerly of Ely, died Friday, June 4, 2004, 
at St. Michael’s Health & Rehabilitation Center in Virginia.

He was born May 7, 1919, to William and Alvina (Lassala) Salo in Gilbert. He 
grew up in Embarrass and graduated from Embarrass High School in 1937. He 
was an Army veteran of World War II, serving from 1941 to 1945 in the 
Pacific Theater. He received a Purple Heart.

He worked underground in the Pioneer Mine from 1947 to 1954 and then for 
Reserve Mining in Babbitt as a power shovel operator, retiring in 1982. He 
moved to Virginia in 2002. He was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign 
Wars and American Legion, and was a life member of the Disabled American 
Veterans.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Mott and Sylvia Karkinen; and 
three brothers, Eino, Wilho and Ernie Salo.

Surviving are two daughters, Carol (Ray) Moore of Eugene, Ore., and Corrine 
(Randall) Mahlman of Owatonna; a son, Kevin Salo, of Soudan; four 
grandchildren, David Mahlman, Amy Mahlman, Jackie McCormick and Bruce 
McCormick; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery
