Melvyn T. Pylka, 66, of Embarrass, dies

Melvyn T. Pylka, 66, of Embarrass, died suddenly Wednesday, Jan. 26, 
2005, at the Ely Bloomenson Hospital.

He was born on May 19, 1938, to Theodore and Eleanor (Niemi) Pylka in 
Embarrass. Mel graduated from Tower-Soudan High School, attended Virginia 
Junior College and then the University of Minnesota-Duluth, graduating in 
1974 with a bachelor's degree in general science. After retirement Mel 
worked as a consultant for various construction firms. He enjoyed 
fishing, hunting, camping and traveling. Mel recently journeyed back to 
Finland for a family reunion. Over the years he had compiled an extensive 
family tree. Mel recently built a new home on his land in Embarrass. 
While working on his home and land, Mel was always willing to lend family 
and friends a helping hand.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Fern; five children, Timothy 
(Barbara) of Mapleton, Kerry (Mary) of Brainerd, Candice (Daniel) 
Anderson of Maple Grove, Stacy (Robert) Lund of Champlin and Gerald 
(Laurie Reynolds) of Seattle, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; three step-
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Wesley (Karen) of White 
Bear Lake and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Gerald.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. James 
Presbyterian Church in Tower. The Rev. Bill Evans will officiate. Spring 
burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the 
National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Family Services by Bauman-Vermilion,
