Sharon Kay Niemi, 47, of Embarrass, dies

Sharon Kay Niemi, 47, of Embarrass, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at her 
sister’s home after a courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born Oct. 16, 1957, to Raymond Clayton and Violet Lorraine (Marsyla) 
Alaspa in Virginia. She attended school in Embarrass until its closing and 
graduated from Babbitt High School in 1976. She completed her certification 
as a nursing assistant in Ely, First Responder Certification from Fortune 
Bay, and was currently working on her EMT certification. 

Sharon married Ted Niemi on April 30, 1993, in Virginia. She worked at 
Fortune Bay as a room inspector. Sharon was previously married to Richard 
Schroeder and had remained close to his loving family. She was an animal 
lover, especially to her St. Bernards, Harley and Carley, and her cat, 
Sissy. Sharon enjoyed fishing, was an avid gardener, loved her trips to 
the casino, 1970s rock concerts and Vikings games. She was a member of the 
World’s Greatest Grandmothers Club. 

She is survived by her husband Ted of Embarrass; four children, Kevin (Amy) 
Schroeder of Biwabik, Georgina (Ricky Leigh) Schroeder of Elkhorn, KY, 
Martin Schroeder of Biwabik, and Catherine Kay Schroeder of Biwabik; three 
grandchildren, Brody and Kali Schnieder of Elkhorn, KY, and Logan Schroeder 
of Biwabik; father, Raymond Alaspa of Embarrass; sister, Peggy (Marvin) 
Benjamin of Hoyt Lakes; two brothers, Kevin (Diane) Alaspa of Aurora and 
Keith (Angel) Alaspa of Silver Bay; numerous nieces, nephews, and other 
relatives and friends. 

She was preceded in death by her mother, Violet, on March 6, 1994; her 
sister, Georgine Alaspa, in 1967; and her grandparents. 

Memorial service were held Friday at Bauman-Vermilion Funeral Chapel in 
Tower. The Rev. LeRoy Holmes will officiate. Burial will be at a later 
date at the Waasa Cemetery. Arrangements are by Bauman-Vermilion, a
