Levar, 78, dies Stanley S. Levar, 78, peacefully passed away to be reunited with his wife, Irene, on Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Sept. 15, 1926, in Ely, to Matthew and Marie (Kovall) Levar. He attended Ely Memorial High School, where he excelled on the swim team. He met Irene Topic and they married on June 25, 1952, enjoying 42 years of marriage. Stanley was employed by the Oliver Mining Company, a division of US Steel Corporation, and worked underground at Pioneer Mine in Ely for 23 years, until its closure in 1967. He continued employment with US Steel at Minntac in Mountain Iron as a foreman until his retirement in 1984. He was a lifetime member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Ely. He loved fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and friends on Burntside Lake. He was a fishing guide on Basswood Lake for more than four decades, establishing lifelong friendships. Stanley is survived by his sons and their families, Steven (Diane) and children, Michael, Ellen and Sarah of Grand Rapids; Tom (Von) and their children, Caleb, Dan and Sam of Hermantown; Frank (Laurie) and their children, Emma and Dylan of Lexington, Mass.; and Andy (Sarah) and their children, Laura and Claire of Ely; brother, Adolf (Ann) of Ely; sister, Genevieve Miller of Eveleth; sisters-in-law, Ann and Olga Levar of Ely; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene; his brothers, Leonard, Matt and Raymond; and sisters, Marie and Roslyn.
