Angela Bernice Lekatz passed away Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Ely
Bloomenson Community Hospital, surrounded by her family and ending her
long and valiant battle with end stage COPD.
She was born July 16, 1921, to Frank and Johanna (Mihelich) Koshier in
Section 30. At age 4, she was placed in St. James Orphange in Duluth,
where she stayed until she was 15. She returned to Ely, where she
worked at Agnew’s Variety Store, the Winton Hospital, and after her
children were grown, the Ely Miner. She married Steve Lekatz on Aug.
31, 1952, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
She was a homemaker who loved the woods, flowers, animals and most of
all her family. She also liked to indulge in an “occasional game of
chance” and was a die-hard Minnesota Twins fan. She taught her
daughters the love of reading and word games.
What Angela lacked in size she made up for with incredible courage,
calm dignity and undefeatable strength and determination. She will
be missed.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Steve “Rooster;”
daughters, Gayle Carlson of Ely, and Lori (Dave) Aldrich of St.
Paul and Ely, and Dave’s daughters, Devon and Andrea Aldrich.
She would never forget to mention her grand-critters L.E., Sammy
and Shrimp who were important in her life. She is also survived by
son-in-law, Robert Carlson of Ely and very special family friend,
Jane Hall, who knew her as “Grandma;” her extended family of John
and Frances Lekatz, Katy Beaty, Ann Royal, Mike Lekatz, Jr., Joyce
Lekatz, Rosemary “Tootsie” Lekatz, all of Ely; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by infant twins, Mark Steven and Stephanie
Mary in 1962; her parents; sisters, Mary Koshier, Joanne Sorrell,
Rose Carlson; and brothers, Frank and Joe Koshier.
Angela had requested that her services be a private ceremony with
only her immediate family present. Family services provided by Kerntz
Brothers, a Bauman Family Funeral Home in Ely.
