Marion Jacobson, 101, a long time resident of Ely , dies

Marion Jacobson, 101, a long time resident of Ely passed away at her 
daughter's home in Faribault MN on Monday, January 17, 2005.

Marion Wood Mitchell, the daughter of James and Sarah (Wood) Mitchell, 
was born in Soudan (Town of Breitung), MN on March 14, 1903. The 
following year her family moved to Ely, where her father was one of the 
early mining captains.

Marion graduated from Ely High School and Winona Teacher's College. She 
taught in Eveleth and Ely until her marriage to Andy Jacobson on June 2, 
1934. She and her husband loved the outdoors, including gardening, 
fishing, and picking blueberries. She was also an avid reader, knitter, 
bridge player extraordinaire, and loyal Viking fan to the end.

Marion loved the Ely United Methodist Church. She was one of the longest 
surviving members and served on various committees. One of her favorite 
roles was the pasty crew that continues to supply many in Ely with 
delicious fare. She was also a member of Eastern Star, and the American 
Legion Auxiliary. In 1995, Marion, the oldest living graduate of Ely 
Memorial High School, was Grand Marshall of the All Class Reunion Parade.

Marion is survived by her daughters Sara (Charles) Ray of Naples, FL and 
Elizabeth (Thomas) Hartman of Faribault, MN.; three grandsons, Charles 
Ray of Huntington Beach, CA, Eric (and Mindy) Ray of San Francisco, CA, 
Christopher Ray of Ft. Myers FL; three granddaughters Sarah (Dominick) 
Korbel of Owatonna, MN, Elizabeth (Brad) Prange and Christine 
(Christopher) Hunt of Faribault MN, and five great- grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Andy Jacobson (1986), her 
parents and three brothers Charles Mitchell, James Mitchell and George 
Mitchell; and four sisters, Anne Eklund, Blanch Hoefler, Audrey Lacey, 
and Sara Hodgkins.

Memorial services will be held at the Ely United Methodist Church on 
Monday, Feb. 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dana Thompson officiating
