Henry H. Hanka, 92, of Aurora, dies



  Henry H. Hanka, 92, of Aurora, died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, in the 

Skilled Nursing Facility of the White Community Hospital in Aurora.

  He was born June 10, 1912, in Embarrass, to Alex and Elizabeth Hanka. 

He attended country school in Embarrass and later began working for the 

DMIR Railroad. He attended St. Paul Barbers College and returned to the 

Iron Range. He married Katherine Fugina on June 10, 1940, in Aurora. He 

worked from his home as a barber and continued working for the railroad 

until his retirement in 1969 as a maintenance worker with 41 years of 

service.

  Henry was a Boy Scout leader for many years and was a charter member 

of the Hoyt Lakes Men’s Male Chorus. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with 

his brothers and spending time with his grandchildren. Two of his 

greatest passions were writing and traveling. He wrote and spoke the 

Finnish language fluently and enjoyed writing articles for the Biwabik 

Times and various Finnish newspapers. Some of his most memorable moments 

were spent traveling to Finland.

  Henry is survived by his wife, Katherine; daughter, Margaret (Bob) 

Laurich of Sarasota, FL; son, Henry (Kathy) Hanka of Duluth; grandchildren, 

Matthew Hanka of St. Paul and Stephanie Hanka of St. Louis, MO; brother, 

Walter Hanka of Pike River; sister, Adele Buono of Saugerties, NY; and 

several nieces and nephews.

  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Levi; and 

sisters, Anelma and Inez

  Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Tuesday, May 17. A luncheon 

will be served at the American Legion Post immediately following the 

visitation. Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery in Aurora.
