Laurence Golobich, 89, dies



  Laurence Golobich, 89, died Feb. 12, 2005 at Village Square Nursing Home 

in San Macos, CA.

  He was born on March 12, 1915 in Ely. He attended the Ely Schools through 

Junior College. 

  Laurence left Ely prior to World War II. He was the head of a CCC Camp in 

Kenmare, ND. He then lived in Minneapolis while in the Army. 

  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II on the front lines during 

the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star.

  Laurence and his family returned to Ely in 1952. In 1979 he retired as a 

supervising engineer at the Ely Bloomenson Hospital.

  He was a Grand Knight for the Knights of Columbus at St. Anthony's 

Catholic Church where he and his family were active parishioners.

  Laurence could fix anything. A friend said when anything went wrong in 

their home, they would just call Laurence. This was true in Ely and 

continued to California.

  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

  Mr. Golobich was preceded in death by his parents, Amalia and John 

Golobich; sister Virginia Golobich; and brother John Golobich.

  He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Astrid Golobich of San Marcos, 

CA; daughter Lois St. Sure of Novato, CA; sisters and brothers-in-law 

Jane Pucel, Mildred Cooley and Joye Soderberg, all of Ely; brother-in-law 

Roy Soderberg of Soudan; grandchildren Catherine, Judith and Jeannette; 

and two great-grandchildren.

  Services were held in St. Mark's Catholic Church in St. Marcos, CA. His 

remains will be buried in Ely.
