Ethel M. Esala, 90, of Sandy Township died Thursday, June 3, 2004, at St. 
Michael’s Health and Rehab Center in Virginia.

She was born in Cook on Dec. 25, 1913, to Adolph and Anna (Aho) Pernu who 
immigrated to the United States in 1879. She married Nick J. Esala on Sept. 
24, 1931. Following marriage, they made their home in Sandy Township where 
they farmed. Besides raising their own children, they raised numerous foster 
children.

She was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church for 73 years and was a 
soloist with the church choir. She was a cook at the Virginia Hospital and 
St. Louis County School No. 14 until her retirement. She was a volunteer 
interpreter for St. Louis County Social Services and upon her husband Nick’s 
death, succeeded him as campaign manager for State Rep. Dominic Elioff. She 
was an avid reader, loved her strawberry garden and her large extended 
family.

Survivors include three sons and a daughter; 20 grandchildren; 40 
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; a brother; a 
sister; daughter-in-laws, including Evelyn Esala of Embarrass.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Nick on July 14, 1983; sons, Rev. 
David Esala and Norman Esala; a granddaughter; 11 brothers; and five 
sisters.
