"Kay" Berglund, 91, a lifelong resident of Tower-Soudan, died Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, in the Virginia Convalescent Center. She was born April 24, 1912, in Soudan, the daughter of Paul and Barbara (Yelenich) Verbon. On Nov. 18, 1933, Kay married Owen Koski and they became the parents of four children. Owen passed away in March of 1954 and Kay then married Eugene Berglund on Dec. 29, 1955. Bergy passed away on Jan. 13, 1995. She was a dedicated, faithful member of St. Martin's Catholic Church, its St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Women's Circle, and taught Catechism for several years. Kay has been very active in the community as a member of the Soudan Study Club, the Women of the Moose, the Lake Vermilion Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1029 Auxiliary, the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 Auxiliary, TOPS, the Altar Society, the Slovenian Women's Union, the Tower-Soudan Dance Club, and the Tower-Soudan Bowling League in which she has been active for 43 years. After Owen passed away, Kay went to work to support her family. She started as a hot lunch cook at the Soudan School, Gornick Brothers Grocery Store, the Tower A&W, and ended her cooking career at Parkside Homes in Soudan, where she cooked for 20 years. She delighted in cooking, often bringing meals to her friends in the neighboring apartments. Survivors include her children, Patricia (Ronald) Rolando of Hoyt Lakes; Judi Anderson of Tower; Jerry Koski of Bismarck, N.D.; and Paula (Robert) Tekautz of Virginia; grandchildren, Michael Anderson, Sherry (Joe) Zupancich, Gary Anderson, Jamie (Melanie) Tekautz, Jon Tekautz, Bobby (Alison) Tekautz, Debbie (David) Pender, Martina (Paul) Drassler, Scott Rolando, Ryan Rolando, Wendy Tuggle, Terri (Howard) Flath, Mark (Jill) Koski, Tracy Scholler; 23 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews, including Agnes Mesojedec and Mary Ann Hill; sister-in-law, Elsie Halvorson; and a host of friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Owen Koski; her second husband, Eugene "Bergy"; grandson, Gary Anderson; a brother, Marco Verbon; sisters, Mary Colarich, Ann Stefanoff, Barbara Johnson, and Helen Chiabotti. Service in St. Martin's Catholic Church in Tower. Rev. Father Rudolph Pakiz celebrated the Mass. Spring Interment will be held in the Lakeview Cemetery in Tower. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Ryan and Scott Rolando, Mark Koski, Michael Anderson, and Jamie, Jon and Bobby Tekautz, Bradley Anderson, and Dustin, Dallin and Darrin Pender.
