James G. Baxter Jr., 72 of Ely, dies

James G. Baxter Jr., 72 of Ely, went to be with Jesus on Feb. 27, 2006. A

memorial celebration of Jim's life will be Friday, March 3 at Washington

Auditorium in Ely at 6 p.m. for visiting, with services at 7 p.m. In lieu

of flowers, memorials are preferred, to be sent to the family.

  Jim was born in the Twin Cities on Nov. 6, 1933 to Rev. James and Helen

Baxter. He graduated from St. Cloud State University in the 1950s. In

1992, Jim retired from his teaching career, but continued coaching high

school hockey through 2006 for over 50 years of coaching. He was a part

of young people's lives at Minnehaha Academy, West, Washburn and

Southwest High Schools in Minneapolis and Ely High School in Ely. He

moved to Ely in 1995 full time and loved his log cabin on the lake, which

he built in the late 1960s. Jim touched many lives everywhere, loved

people and went the extra mile to help those who needed him. His greatest

desire was to have everyone spend eternity with him and his Savior, Jesus

Christ.

  Survivors include: wife Diane; daughters: Barb (Tim) Cooper of Isabella;

Sherri (Terry) Miller of Faribault; Laurie (Joe) Juranitch of St. Louis

Park; grandchildren: April and Stephanie Cooper, Michelle & Noah Miller;

brother Richard (Carolee) of Mpls; sister: Joan (Ben) Larson of Ely and

many nieces, nephews & cousins.

  Jim was preceded in death by his parents Rev. James and Helen, and two

sisters; Eva Mae and Grace Ann.
