WILLIAM H. BREMNER - Vol II, pg 131
William H. Bremner, the president of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad, was
born in Marshalltown, Iowa, on the 24th of October, 1869. Following his
graduation from the Marshalltown high school, in 1886, he worked in the
passenger department of the Iowa Central Railroad for a year and then entered
the University of Iowa in 1887, receiving the degree of Civil Engineer in 1891.
Two years were spent in the engineering department of the Chicago, Burlington &
Quincy Railroad, after which Mr. Bremner returned to the University of Iowa to
enter the law department of that institution, which in 1895 conferred upon him
the degree of Bachelor of Laws. Ho played football while a student and managed
the 'varsity team in 1894. It was in August, 1895, that he entered upon the
general practice of law in Des Moines, where he served as city solicitor from
1902 until 1908. The year 1909 witnessed his arrival in Minneapolis and here he
became general attorney of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad. In 1913 he was
named general solicitor, while three years later he was made general counsel of
the road, the directors of which elected him president in 1917. In the last
named capacity he has served continuously since, save for the period between
July 1, 1918, and March 1, 1920, when he acted as federal manager for the road
under the United States railroad administration.
In young manhood Mr. Bremner wedded Miss Emily Thorpe McKell. Since attaining
his majority he has given his political endorsement to the republican party and
while a resident of Des Moines he took an active part in political affairs. His
religious faith is that of the Presbyterian church and he belongs to the
Minneapolis, the Minneapolis Athletic, the Lincoln, the Minikahda, and the
Automobile clubs.
