THEOPHIL BASTING - Vol II, pg 477
Theophil Basting, a well known capitalist of Minneapolis, was born in Eberbach,
Germany, in 1845, a son of Andrew and Wilhelmina (Schmidt) Basting. His father
was born jn that country and was one of the prominent physicians and surgeons of
his day. He lived in Wiesbaden for many years. Upon retiring from active
practice, however, he located in Worms and was there when his demise occurred.
Theophil Basting received his early education in the public schools of his
native country, and in 1862 came to the United States. He located at Eureka,
Illinois, with a brother, who came to this country with him. He entered the
employ of a druggist in Eureka and soon became familiar with pharmaceutical work
in all of its phases. In 1866 he came to Minneapolis and entered the employ of
T. K. Gray & Brother, druggists. They were then located on Bridge square and he
remained with them until 1869, when he accepted a position as bookkeeper for J.
C. Oswald, a dealer in fine liquors. In 1886 he was taken into partnership with
Mr. Oswald and that association was continued until the death of Mr. Oswald in
1905. At that time the business was discontinued and Mr. Basting became executor
and trustee of the estate for ten years. When the estate was divided Mr. Basting
turned his attention to his personal affairs and has since been active in their
promotion. This record of Mr. Basting's career shows what may be accomplished
when stanch determination, close application to business and honesty and
integrity lead the way. No man stands higher for integrity and sterling worth
than Mr. Basting and he well merits the confidence and esteem accorded him.
In Minneapolis, on the 14th of June, 1876, was celebrated the marriage of Mr.
Basting and Miss Mathilda A. Oswald, a daughter of J. C. Oswald, mention of whom
is made above. To their union two children have been born: Edward A.; and Louis
O., who married Miss Maud Ashem and now resides in Highland Park, Illinois.
Although Mr. Basting gives his stanch support to the democratic party, he has
never sought nor desired public preferment. He is, however, essentially
public-spirited and has wielded a great influence for good in this city. In his
boyhood days he was very fond of outdoor sports, particularly fishing and
hunting. Now he prefers his home above all else and he cares little for society.
His first residence in this city, which he built when he was married, was at the
corner of Ninth and Hennepin. That site has now been taken over for business
purposes. His present home, which is a beautiful residence, is located at 1721
Mt. Curve avenue.
