H. A. BALTUFF (Harry Ancel Baltuff) - Vol II, pg 425-426
Few men are more widely known in the enterprising city of Minneapolis than H. A.
Baltuff, who is owner and manager of the Reporter Printing Company. He was born
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the 21st of July, 1860, a son of Valentine and Mary
Elizabeth (McCall) Baltuff, the former a native of Watertown, New York, and the
latter born in Wisconsin. The maternal grandfather was Ansel McCall, who for
some years was active in the conduct of a hotel at Whitewater. Valentine Baltuff
went to Wisconsin at an early date and located in Milwaukee, engaging in the
publication of a newspaper and also conducting a job printing establishment. He
achieved substantial success in that connection and lived retired for some time
prior to his demise, which occurred in 1913, at the age of seventy-nine years.
In the acquirement of his education H. A. Baltuff attended the public schools of
Charles City, Iowa, and was a student in the high school for three years. After
putting his textbooks aside he went into the job printing and newspaper office
of his father and was active in that connection until 1878, when he removed to
Davenport, Iowa, residing there for some three years, and becoming associated
with Egbert, Fidler & Chambers. In 1881 he came to Minneapolis and continued in
the printing business as an employe of Harrison & Smith, being foreman for ten
years. Mr. Baltuff possessed untiring energy and was quick of perception and
subsequently he determined to establish a business of his own. Therefore he
entered advertising circles and was active in that connection until 1896, when
he laid the foundations for his present prosperous business, which is conducted
under the name of the Reporter Printing Company. The value of his plant is
estimated at about seventeen thousand dollars and the business has become an
important factor in business circles. Mr. Baltuff publishes all the fruit and
produce markets and the merchants of Minneapolis rely upon his publication for
their standard prices. He has extensive Financial interests throughout the state
and owns a beautiful home valued at ten thousand dollars.
On the 26th of December, 1887, in Minneapolis, was celebrated the marriage of
Mr. Baltuff and Miss Sarah S. Read, a daughter of Fred Read of Minnesota. He was
engaged in the real estate and insurance business for many years. To Mr. and
Mrs. Baltuff two children were born: Edward M., thirty-one years of age, who
married Miss Harriett Bachman of Minneapolis, and they have, one child; and Mrs.
Donald Ziegler, who is twenty-five years of age and the mother of one child.
Since attaining his majority Mr. Baltuff lias given his political allegiance to
the republican party, having firm belief in the principles of that party as
factors in good government. He has been a committeeman of the party for the past
eight years and he maintains an active interest in all of its affairs.
Fraternally he is identified with the Masons, having attained the thirty-second
degree of the Scottish Rite. He is like­wise a member of the Modern Samaritan
and the Royal League of Minneapolis. He is public-spirited, giving his
cooperation to every movement which tends to promote the moral, intellectual and
material welfare of the community and he is an active member of the Minneapolis
Civic & Commercial Association and of the Excelsior Com­mercial Club. Socially
he is identified with the Minnetonka Golf Club. Mr. Baltuff has earned for
himself an enviable reputation as a careful man of business and in his dealings
is known for his prompt and honorable methods, which have won him the deserved
and unbounded confidence of his fellowmen
