BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, Vol. XXXII, Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of
Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Boston, Biographical Review
Publishing Company: 1899, pp 193-195.

Dr. Samuel J. McMillan, a skillful and popular dentist of Somerset, Pa., is a
native of Addison township, Somerset County. He is a son of Jehu and Mary A.
(Ream) McMillan, and is descended from one of the early settled families of this
section of the State, his paternal grandfather, John K. McMillan, having spent
his seventy-five years of earthly life in the southern part of Somerset County.
John K. McMillan learned the tanner's trade when a young man; and after his
marriage he settled in Turkey Foot township, where he carried on general farming
and also operated a tannery during his active years. He was industrious and
enterprising, a man of excellent judgment, and successful in business, at his
death leaving a good property. In early life he was a Whig, but later he became
one of the stanchest [sic] adherents of the Republican party. He was
influential in public affairs, and for several years was Postmaster of
Paddytown, in Upper Turkey Foot township. A man of eminent piety, he was an
active member of the Methodist church, with which he united when young. He was
three times married. By his first wife, Mary Rush, he had four children-Jacob
R., Jehu, Reuben, and Eli. His second wife, who was a Miss Critchfield, bore
two children, of whom one Silas C., is now living. His third wife, Clarissa
Williams, of Bedford County, died without issue.
Jehu McMillan, second son of John K., was born in Upper Turkey Foot, where he
early became familiar with agricultural pursuits, and also learned from his
father the tanner's trade. On reaching man's estate he purchased a tannery in
Addison township, and worked as a tanner until ready to retire from active
pursuits, when he turned the entire business over to the management of his
youngest son, Charles R. Mr. Jehu McMillan and his good wife are spending their
declining years with is son at the old homestead, enjoying in quiet leisure the
fruits of their previous years of well-spent labor. He is an earnest supporter
of the principles of the Republican party, and for some years was Postmaster at
Listonburg, Pa. His wife, formerly Mary A. Ream, was born in Lower Turkey Foot
township, a daughter of Samuel Ream. Of their union eight children have been
born, as follows: Dr. Samuel J.; Milton R.; Susan, wife of Jesse Liston, of
Addison, Pa.; Martha J., wife of J. H. Augustine, of Addison, and mother of one
child, Willis; Amanda J., wife of Joseph Pullin, of Iowa, and mother of five
children; J. Lloyd, of Kansas; William S.; and Charles R., who married Ida
Augustine, of Addison, and has two children-Columbus and Paul. Both parents are
valued members of the Baptist church
Samuel J. McMillan obtained his elementary education in the schools of
Listonburg, Pa., and afterward attended the college at Harlem Springs, Ohio.
Returning home, he learned the trade of a leather currier, which he followed for
twelve consecutive years, and then gave it up to turn his whole attention to the
study of dentistry, in which he had long been interested. Entering the
University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, he was graduated with the class of
1884, and for a brief time practiced dentistry in that city. Going then to
Confluence, Somerset County, he was there associated with Dr. Tannehill a few
months. In the latter part of the year 1884 Dr. McMillan opened an office in
Somerset, where by his evident skill and thorough knowledge of his profession he
has won the confidence and esteem of the people, and built up a large and
lucrative practice.
He is prominently identified with several fraternal organizations, being a
member and a Past Master of Somerset Lodge, No, 358, F. & A. M.; a member of the
Somerset Lodge, I.O.O.F.; a member of Hiawatha Lodge, of Addison, and a Past
Grand of that lodge; and also a member of the Golden Eagle Lodge, of Somerset.
He is active in religious circles and a worthy member of the Christian church.
Dr. McMillan was married April 21, 1880, to Mary C., daughter of the Hon.
Charles Kantner, of Virginia. They have two children; namely, Lena B. and
Eunice K.
