Leonard A. MAUST.
The family of which Leonard A. Maust, of Garrett, is a representative,
has been for more than a century and a quarter resident in Somerset county,
where it was founded by Jacob Maust, who was of Swiss or German birth. 
Samuel Maust, presumably a son of Jacob Maust, was a native of Elk Lick
township and a farmer.  His son, Leonard Maust, was born in the same
township, and was also engaged in agriculture.  He was a member of the
Amish Mennonite church and a Republican.  Leonard Maust married Catharine,
daughter of Daniel Yutzy, of Greenville township, and their children were:
Daniel W., Simon L., Anna (deceased), and Leonard A., of whom later. 
Leonard Maust died October 14, 1865, aged thirty-two years.  Mrs. Catharine
Maust is living in Grantsville, Maryland.
Leonard A. Maust, son of Leonard and Catharine (Yutzy) Maust, was born
August 28, 1865, in Elk Lick township, where he attended the public schools
until the age of sixteen.  He then entered the Normal school at Pocahontas,
and in 1882 began to teach in the schools of Maryland.  He continued to
engage in educational work until 1884, and then took a commercial course at
Mount Union College, Ohio, graduating there in 1885 and returning to Elk
Lick township, where he taught for five years.  In 1890 he entered the
service of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company as telegraph operator at
Sand Patch, and from this position was promoted until he reached that of
station agent at Garrett, which he has held since October 23, 1891.  He is
a stockholder in the Garrett Water Company, in which he holds the office of
secretary.  From 1903 to 1905 he served as burgess, ande since June, 1905,
has been school director.  He belongs to the Maccabees, is a Republican and
a member of the German Baptist church. 
Mr. Maust married, August 9, 1885, Mary E., daughter of John Lentz, then
of Elk Lick, now of Berlin, and their children were: Sadie G. (deceased),
Arthur B., John L., Robert LeRoy (deceased), Bessie F., Anna Katharine,
Harry B. (deceased), Hazel M., Tyranus, Alberta, Margaret Leona, and Lloyd
Kirby (deceased).
