BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, Vol. XXXII, Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of
Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Boston, Biographical Review
Publishing Company: 1899, pp 263-264.

George Cobaugh Lichty, an extensive and successful agriculturist of Somerset,
Pa., and one of its most highly esteemed citizens, was born November 17, 1831,
at Jenner township, Pa., a son of Daniel J. and Sarah (Cobaugh) Lichty. He
comes of thrifty Swiss ancestry, his paternal grandparents, Joseph J. and Frany
(Forney) Lichty, who were married in this State, having been born and bred in
Switzerland.
Coming to America in early manhood, Joseph J. Lichty bought land in Somerset
County, in the township of Elk Lick, where he was industriously employed in
general farming until his death, at the age of four score and four years.
Fourteen children were born to him and his wife, and they all reached years of
maturity.
Daniel J. Lichty was born at Elk Lick, December 13, 1804. Coming with his
parents to Somerset when but a boy, he assisted in clearing land and improving a
homestead. Subsequently, choosing the occupation to which he was brought up, he
removed to Jenner township, and was there employed in agricultural pursuits
until 1848. Returning then to Somerset township, he bought the homestead now
owned and occupied by his son George C., and here continued his operations as a
tiller of the soil until his decease, June 25, 1874. A stanch Republican in
politics, he took a general interest in local and national affairs, and as a
worthy and useful citizen was respected throughout the community. On March 8,
1831, he married Sarah Cobaugh, who was born in Somerset, April 10, 1812, the
daughter of John and Rebecca (Good) Cobaugh. This union was blessed by the
birth of three children - George C., Mary C., and Rebecca C. Mary C. married
Hon. William H. Miller, of Stoyestown, Pa., and has had seven children, four of
whom are living; namely, Royal, Ada, Carrie and Olive. Rebecca C. married the
Hon. Emanuel J. Meyers, of Berlin, Pa. He died in February, 1884, leaving three
children - Harvey, Ida, and Robert. The mother, Mrs. Sarah C. Lichty, is still
living and makes her home with her son, George C. She belongs to the
Evangelical church, of which her husband was an active member during his life.
(A sketch of her brother, George Cobaugh, may be found on another page.)
George C. Lichty attended the public schools of Jenner township through his
boyhood and early youth. At the age of seventeen he came with his parents to
Somerset township and settling with them on the farm where he now lives, has
since devoted his time to agriculture. Industrious, skilful, and an excellent
manager, he is numbered among the leading farmers of this part of Somerset
County. He is an ardent supporter of the Republican party, and has served
efficiently as County Auditor and Jury Commissioner.
On October 13, 1857, Mr. Lichty married Sarah A., daughter of Jacob and Lydia
(Ankeny) Casebeer. Her parents had four children, but only two of them are now
living, Mrs. Lichty and her sister Ellen. The later married Josiah L. Berkey,
of Somerset, and has five children - Lizzie, Nellie, Charles, Parker, and Annie.
Mr. Casebeer passed away at the age of seventy-eight years, and Mrs. Casebeer
when five years younger. They were both members of the Lutheran church of
Lincoln township. Nine children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Lichty, and five
of them are living; namely, Mary Ellen, Jacob C., Daniel G., Allen G., and
Lillie M. Jacob C. Lichty married Annie Kline, of Lincoln, Pa., and has three
children - Norman, Marion, and Bruce. Daniel G. married Minnie Lichty, a
distant relative; and he and his wife with their two children, Olin and Sarah
Ethel, are living in Waterloo, Blackhawk County, Ia. Allen G. married Josie
Bickley, of Iowa, and they also have two children - Parker and Florence. Allen
G. Lichty also resides in Waterloo, Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Lichty are active members
of the Lutheran church in Lincoln township.
