BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, Vol. XXXII, Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of
Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Boston, Biographical Review
Publishing Company: 1899, pp 138 and 141.

Lewis C. Lambert, an active and well-known citizen of Stony Creek township,
Pa., residing at Lambertsville, was born near this town, April 29, 1847. He is
the younger son of the late Josiah Lambert, and comes of worthy pioneer
ancestry, being a great-grandson of John and Mary (Statler) Lambert, who were
among the original settlers of Stony Creek township, in which his paternal
grandparents, Samuel and Sarah (Good) Lambert, spent their entire lives.
(Further ancestral history may be found in connection with the sketch of
Jonathan Lambert, which appears elsewhere in this volume.)
Josiah Lambert was born in Stony Creek township in 1815, and was here engaged
in general farming and lumbering until his death, November 4, 1882. His first
wife, Rebecca Miller, daughter of William Miller, died in early womanhood,
leaving one child, William Lambert. He afterward married Margrette Wolf,
daughter of John C. and Mary (Spangler) Wolf. Of this union but one child was
born, Lewis C., further mentioned below. Mrs. Margrette W. Lambert is still
living, and resides in Lambertsville.
Lewis C. Lambert obtained his education in the district schools of Stony
Creek, and when but a youth enlisted as a private in the Fifth Pennsylvania
Heavy Artillery, joining Company K, of which his cousin, Jonathan Lambert, was a
member, and with his comrades did brave service. At the expiration of his term
of enlistment he returned to Stony Creek, and, locating in the village of
Lambertsville, was for several years successfully engaged as a lumber
manufacturer and dealer, and was for some time in the charcoal business. Making
use of his natural mechanical ingenuity and skill, Mr. Lambert subsequently
invented a wagon brake for use on wagons of all kinds; and, having received a
patent in April, 1896, he is now intent upon putting it before the public.
He is an influential, public-spirited citizen, Republican in politics, and has
served as School Director. He has the distinction of having been the first
Postmaster at Lambertsville, an office to which he was appointed under President
Garfield, and while holding this position he conducted the first grocery store
established in the village. Fraternally, he is a member and Past Commander of
the Reuben Ferner Post, No. 318, G.A.R., of Stoyestown. Both he and his wife
belong to the Lutheran church, in which he has been Elder several years.
On January 30, 1872, Mr. Lambert married Laura Baltzer, who was born in
Stoyestown, Pa., January 30, 1854, a daughter of Henry and Sarah (Vicroy)
Baltzer. Her parents had ten children, of whom three are now living, namely:
Isaiah, Mrs. Lambert, and William. Her father, who died at the age of seventy
years, was engaged during his active life in mercantile pursuits, being located
in different places, including Johnstown, Stoyestown, Sprucetown, a village in
Quemahoning township, and in Edenburg, Clarion County, Pa., where he spent his
last days, and where his widow now makes her home with her son Isaiah. Mrs.
Lambert's paternal grandfather, John Baltzer, was born in Germany. On
emigrating to America, he came directly to Somerset County and settled in
Quemahoning township, where he became the pioneer manufacturer of linseed oil,
and carried on a good business many years. His wife was Sarah Gearhart. Six
children were born to them, and four of the family are now living, namely:
Louisa, Mary, George, and Ellen. Mr. and Mrs Lambert have had eleven children,
nine of whom are living, the following being their record: Lillian Blanche, born
October 11, 1872, now the wife of Leroy W. Scott, of Pittsburg, Pa., and mother
of two children - Pearl and Burton; Park G., born August 26, 1876, now in
California; Gertrude E., born January 26, 1878; Nina Pearl, born May 3, 1880;
Clyde B., born July 1, 1883; Herman W., born January 17, 1885; Elsie M., born
December 10, 1887; Lewis C., Jr., born April 30, 1890; and Paul H., born July
16, 1894.
