BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, Vol. XXXII, Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of
Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Boston, Biographical Review
Publishing Company: 1899, pp325-326.

Daniel Kimmel, a well-known and prosperous agriculturist of the town of
Somerset, Pa., was born May 27, 1829, at Stony Creek, Somerset County, which was
also the birthplace of his father, Jonathan Kimmel. His paternal grandfather,
Jacob Kimmel, was engaged as a farmer at Stony Creek during his entire life.
The maiden name of Grandfather Kimmel's wife is not known to the present
generation, the records of the ancestors not having been preserved.
Jonathan Kimmel was born January 25, 1798, and died on the old home farm at
Stony Creek, July 7, 1878. Reared as a farmer's son, he succeeded to the
ownership of the ancestral acres, and during his entire life carried on general
farming. A man respected for his integrity, good judgment, and sound sense, he
took a prominent part in local public matters, and at one time was County
Commissioner. In politics he was a strong Republican. In the Baptist church,
to which both he and his wife belonged, he served many years as Deacon. His
wife, Susan Meyers, daughter of Jacob Myers, of Berlin, Pa., was born June 3,
1799, and died January 14, 1883. They had a family of six sons and three
daughters, of whom four are living; namely, Josiah, John M., Daniel, and
Jonathan J. The following is a brief record: Josiah married Susan Glessner, of
Stony Creek, and has four living children- Jacob, Joseph, Edward, and Milton.
John M., whose first wife, Elizabeth Miller, of Meyersdale, died, leaving him
seven children- William, Mary, Susan, Jonathan, Obadiah, Harry, and Sarah -
subsequently married Nancy Kimmel, a distant relative, who bore him four
children- Lizzie, Washington, Emma, and Rebecca. Jonathan J. F. has been twice
married. By his first wife, Elizabeth Farnier, he has five children- Harry,
Mary, Jane, Ida, and Samuel. Of his union with his second wife also, whose
maiden name was Sarah Crouner, five children have been born.
Daniel Kimmel was educated in the district schools of Stony Creek, and while
living at the old homestead he acquired a practical knowledge of the various
branches of agriculture. In 1855 he purchased one hundred and seventy-seven
acres of his present farm in Somerset, and has since carried it on with energy
and success. He has made improvements of an excellent character on his original
farm, and has added to it by the purchase of forty more acres of land, his
estate being now one of the most attractive in this locality. Since coming here
Mr. Kimmel has taken an intelligent interest in all matters concerning the
welfare of the town, and has been one of the foremost to assist in works of
improvement. He supports by voice and vote the principles of the Republican
party, and at one time served as Poorhouse Director.
On December 23, 1851, Mr. Kimmel married Emeline Landis, who was born on April
20, 1829, a daughter of Abraham and Sarah (Glessner) Landis. Mr. and Mrs.
Kimmel have four children, namely: Jacob O., who was born January 4, 1853, and
married Mary Weyent; Sarah E., born September 19, 1855, who is the wife of
Samuel U. Shober, of Somerset, and has four children- Ulysses S., Jennie L.,
Clinton, and Marley; Mary Jane, born September 18, 1859, who married Frank
Coleman, of Brother's Valley, Pa., and has three children- Oscar, Annie, and
Mary; and Amy Susan, born July 17, 1862, who is the wife of James W. Winters, of
Somerset, and has two children- Jacob W. and John B. Mr. and Mrs. Kimmel are
active members of the Baptist church, of which he has been Deacon a number of
years.
