BIOGRAPHICAL REVIEW, Vol. XXXII, Containing Life Sketches of Leading Citizens of
Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania. Boston, Biographical Review
Publishing Company: 1899, pp 275-276.

Calvin T. Hay, hotel-keeper of Salisbury, Somerset County, Pa., where he is
the owner of valuable real estate, was born in Brother's Valley, June 18, 1847.
His parents were David and Mary (Cook) Hay, the latter a daughter of Jacob Cook,
of Wellersburg, and his paternal grandparents were Peter and Elizabeth (Walker)
Hay. The family is of German origin, and a further account of its ancestry will
be found in a sketch of William H. Hay, which appears elsewhere in the Review.
David Hay, the father, was a native of Brother's Valley, and the active period
of his life was spent upon a farm in Elk Lick. He was a leading spirit in local
public affairs, held some of the town offices, and represented his district in
the legislature one term. He was an active member of the Reformed church.
David Hay died in 1879, aged sixty-two years, and his wife died in 1849. They
had two sons: William H., a prominent business man of Meyersdale; and Calvin T.,
the subject of this sketch.
Calvin T. Hay was educated in the common schools of Elk Lick. When a young
man he cultivated for two years a farm adjoining the homestead property, and
then going to Kansas was engaged in agricultural pursuits one year, and in the
grocery and provision business for two years. He next went to Nebraska, where
he was engaged in the feed business for the same length of time. Returning to
Elk Lick in 1876, he resumed farming. Settling at Salisbury in 1878, he built a
residence, and for the next three years he kept a grocery store. He then
erected a business block and hotel, managing the later until it was burned.
Immediately rebuilding, he has since conducted a first-class hostelry. He also
built a business block and the Opera House. For five years he was interested in
the coal business.
On February 25, 1868, Mr. Hay was joined in marriage with Drucilla Devore,
daughter of Samuel and Mary (Beal) Devore, of Cooks Mills, Bedford County, Pa.
Her father was of French origin, and a descendant of an early settler in that
locality. Mr. and Mrs. Hay are the parents of twelve children, namely: David
I., who married Kittie Wagner, and has four children; Mary A., who married Lewis
Keim, and has four children; Ora B., at home; William N., who is married and has
one child; Edwin C., Ira F., and Grace D., all at home; Hattie; Emma C.;
Francis; Ruth D.; and Edna M.
Politically, Mr. Hay is a Democrat. He is a charter member of the local lodge
of Odd Fellows and is a Past Grand. He attends the Reformed church.
