JOHN HAMER (HAMAR) came to Shade Township from
Shropshire, England, in 1823. He worked for the Shade Furnace
Company at Shade Furnace until 1825, when the company erected
Shade Forge, about one-half mile downstream (along Shade Creek)
from the furnace. Hamer then took over the operation of the forge,
continuing until 1844 when it was abandoned. The base of the old
forge is stillvisible. After the forge was abandoned, Hamer moved
his family to a farm near Hooversville, which he had purchased in
1837. He served several terms as a justice of the peace and also
taught school in Shade Township.
