  John S. Garman, M.D., was born in Stoyestown, June 9, 1855.  He was educated 
in the public schools of Berlin and in the county normal school, and he taught 
several terms in Brother's Valley and Allegheny townships.  From 1872 to 1876 he 
studied medicine with is father, and since graduating from the Baltimore College 
of Physicians and Surgeons in 1878 he has been busily engaged in practice with 
his father.  He has acquired a high reputation as an able physician, and his 
practice extends over a wide circuit.
  In 1882 Dr. J. S. Garman was joined in marriage with Minnie Hargnett, daughter 
of John and Effie (McDonald) Hargnett, of Ligonier, Westmoreland County.  John 
Hargnett was a prominent merchant and banker of Ligonier, and a representative 
of a highly reputable Westmoreland County family.  He was actively concerned in 
county and township politics, and represented his district in the legislature.  
He died in 1896, aged eighty-eight years.  His first wife was a Miss Platt, his 
second a Miss Trober, of Greensburg, and his third was Effie McDonald, of 
Indiana County.  Mrs. Garman is the mother of four children, namely: J. 
Hargnett, born January 10, 1883; May I., born June 21, 1884; Ralph, born May 3, 
1887; and Lorene, born June 3, 1892.
  The Doctor is a member of the Somerset County and Tri-State Medical Societies, 
the latter including the States of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia, 
and is local physician for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company.  He is 
Burgess of the borough, and a member of the Board of Health.  In politics he is 
a Democrat.  He belongs to Meyersdale Lodge, F. & A.M., and is a Past Grand of 
Berlin Lodge, I.O.O.F.
