No Relief From High temperatures To-day
While the hospitals of the city last night reported hundreds of serious
cases of prostrations, so far as is known twenty deaths, eight of them
children, were due directly to the heat. The daily death list through was
largely increased through the prevalence of the exceedingly high
temperature. The dead from heat are:

Vine street, overcome near 308 High street and died on the porch. Body taken
to the Morgue.

North Marshall street, and died on the way to the hospital.
REYNOLD HEIDNACK, infant, 1415 South Dover street.
Street Sergeant THOMAS MOORE, age 73 years, one of the oldest members of
the city police force and now attached to the Third and De Lancey streets
station, was overcome by heat while making his rounds last night and was
removed to his home, 350 South Fourth street. His advanced age makes his
recovery doubtful.
Yesterday the suffering of man and beast was intense throughout all
sections of the city. Experienced police officers and hospital authorities
state that they cannot recall a hot spell when so many prostrations from the
heat were reported. It is occasion for remark, they say, that so few
fatalities have resulted among so may cases of prostration.
The highest temperature of the day was 102 degrees, according to the
weather Bureau observations, and this was at 3:45 P. M. Humidity was not
excessive, and for this reason the heat was more bearable than otherwise
would have been the case. At 8 o'clock last evening the temperature was 96
degrees. The temperatures rose steadily from that hour onward and were
successively 89, 95, 96,98, 99,100, 101, 102, 101, 100, 99, 96 degrees in
the hours following. The highest temperature ever recorded before yesterday
was 101.5 degrees on September 7, 1881.
Note: there were 76 deaths due to the heat wave of July 1 and 2nd.
