February 20, 1833
FABER, Johann Theobald, was born Sept. 21, 1771 in the upper part of
Sumneytown. His father was a native of Germany, and was also named Johann
Theobald. The father had been a minister at various places and he died
while preaching a sermon at New Goshenhoppen. Other charges of the father
included Tohickon and Lancaster. The mother was a born ROSE of Reading.
J. T. F., Jr. was the eldest of seven children, was baptized by Rev. Groos.
He began his ministerial studies aged about 17 under the Revs. Handel and
Melsheimer. He began his work at the Goshenhoppen charge after three
years. Aged about 20 he married Maria ARNDT of Easton. They had 4
children, 2 sons and 2 daughters, one of the sons having died. The mother
died in 1827. After spending 15 years at New Goshenhoppen, he received a
call to Lancaster where he servied 12 years. Fourteen years ago he was
again called to New Goshenhoppen, where he has served since. On January
31, while delivering a sermon, he was stricken -- like his father -- and he
died on February 10. His father was stricken on the same pulpit 45 years
before. Both now rest in the New Goshenhoppen Cemetery at the side of the
altar. (changed since the erection in 1857 of the present church) Rev.
Fr. Waage preached the sermon.
