Today's obituaries CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. -- John W. FERRY III, 19-year resident of
Flossmoor, Ill., formerly of Mayfield Road, Sharpsville, died at 8:13 p.m. Wednesday,
Jan. 30, 2002, in St. James Hospital after a brief illness. He was 73. Mr. Ferry was
born March 11, 1928, in Sharon, to John W. Ferry Jr. and Mary Huether Ferry. Born and
raised in Sharon, he was a 1946 graduate of Sharon High School. Mr. Ferry was a 1950
alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, where he earned his bachelor's
degree in civil engineering.
Following graduation from college, he was immediately COMMISSIONED AS A LIEUTENANT
WITH THE U.S. NAVY. HE SERVED ON THE BATTLESHIP USS JUNEAU AS A GUNNERY OFFICER, AND
WITH THE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS BENNINGTON AND INTREPID AS A FLIGHT DECK CONTROLLER FROM
1950 UNTIL 1953 DURING THE KOREAN CONFLICT. An engineer by trade, Mr. Ferry began his
career in the tubing industry with what is now AK Steel, Sawhill Tubular Division,
Wheatland. He later worked as senior vice president of Van Huffel Tube Co. in Warren,
Ohio for 16 years until his move from Sharpsville to Flossmoor in 1982.
Mr. Ferry retired in 1996 from Midwest Manufacturing in Chicago Heights as director of
manufacturing, where he worked since 1982. He served on the board of directors of the
Jones Memorial Community Center in Chicago Heights as buildings and grounds chairman
from 1992 to 1998.
He was a member of Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Flossmoor, and a former
member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon. A devoted husband and father, he leaves: his
wife of 45 years, the former Gloria Nolan, at home; a daughter, Margaret Ferry,
Washington, D.C.; three sons, Jack and his wife Bernadette Ferry, Pittsburgh; Kevin and
his wife Kaye Ferry, Wayne, Ill.; and Robert and his wife Colleen Ferry, Charlotte,
N.C.; one brother, Charles and his wife Mary Charlotte Ferry, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and
five grandchildren, Michael, Erin, Lauren, Collin and Parker Ferry. Mr. Ferry was
preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Margaret Miskin, who died in 1975.

Robert B. MINICK Sr., Greenville, died at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in the
hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 59. Mr. Minick was born March 9,
1942, in Meadville to Duff O. Minick and Treva L. Lester Minick. He was a 1960
graduate of the former Randolph East Mead High School, which is now Maplewood High
School, in Guys Mills. He retired from polk center, where he was a patient aide.
MR. MINICK WAS A VETERAN OF THE U.S. AIR FORCE and attended Miracle Valley Church in
Hermitage. Surviving are: one son, Robert B. Minick Jr. and his wife Melissa,
Harrisville; one stepson, Brian L. Moore, Franklin; one brother, Charles L. Minick,

Linda Sue PATTERSON, 511 Harley Way, Sharon, died at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday (1-30-02) in
her residence after an extended illness. She was 50.
Mrs. Patterson was born Oct. 14, 1951, in Sharon to Kenneth Eugene and Verna Mae Reed
Taylor. She was assistant manager for seven years at Roberts' Boarding Kennels,
Hermitage. Mrs. Patterson attended Neshannock Alliance Church, Hermitage.
Surviving are: her husband, James F. Patterson, whom she married Feb. 14, 1970; two
daughters, Gina Patterson, Sharon; and Mandy Patterson, at home; her mother,
Hermitage; two brothers, Kevin Taylor and Bruce Taylor, both Hermitage; and three
grandchildren, Christopher, Devin and Ariaona Patterson, all Sharon. Her father

A funeral service will be held Saturday for William Arthur YOUNG, 1001 Sherman Ave.,
Sharon. He died at 7 p.m. Tuesday (1-29-02) in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. He
was 98.
Mr. Young was born July 8, 1903, in Salisbury, N.C. and retired in 1968 from the
former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. Until the age of 96, Mr. Young enjoyed
working a flourishing garden at his home, growing his own vegetables and fruits, which
he generously shared with many neighbors and friends. He loved to spend time around
his home, working on cars and doing handyman chores.
In his earlier years, Mr. Young owned a truck, with which he hauled coal and rubbish
for 47 years. He was a former member of Cedar Avenue Church of God in Sharon, and at
one time worked tirelessly at National Association of the Church of God Campgrounds in
West Middlesex, doing various volunteer work including security, home building and
groundskeeping. As an active and hard-working senior citizen, Mr. Young was featured
on July 24, 1993 in an article published in The Herald. His wife, the former Amye C.
Cherry, whom he married on Dec. 24, 1924, died June 2, 1998. Surviving are: his
daughter, Willa R. Young-Petty, Kettering, Md.; four grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
Besides his wife, Mr. Young was preceded in death by a son, Fred Young.

EXETER, N.H. -- Dorothy Fagan KAHL, Exeter, formerly of Sharon, died at 5:30 a.m.
Wednesday, January 30, 2002, in Riverwoods- Exeter retirement community. She was 84.
Born August 19, 1917 in Sharon, Mrs. Kahl was the eldest child of the late Charles D.
and Florence Cawley Fagan of Sharon. In 1942, she married Edwin James Kahl, who died
February 5, 1985. Mrs. Kahl was a long-time member of Church of Notre Dame in
Hermitage. She and her husband were lifelong residents of the Sharon/Hermitage
areas. Mrs. Kahl was educated at Youngstown State University and worked for the former
Sharpsville Steel Corporation prior to her marriage. The oldest of seven children,
Dorothy is survived by: sisters Betty Drinan, Michigan; and Margaret Kawana, Sharon.
She is also survived by three sons: Edwin James Kahl, Woodside, Calif.; Thomas William
Kahl, Pittsburgh; and Michael Fagan Kahl, Chatham, Mass.; and five daughters: Jane
Marie Gasda, Frederick, Md.; Susan Anne Rogacs, State College, Pa.; Mary Eileen
Stover, Block Island, R.I.; Dorothy Elizabeth Keenan, Cheshire, Conn.; and Kathleen
Ann Kneram, Newburyport, Mass. In addition to her sisters and her children, she is
survived by 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Besides her parents and her
husband, her brothers Charles, William, Tom and Robert Fagan preceded her in death.

Mrs. Kidwell was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Utica, Ohio, a daughter of Lemuel and Anna
Oates Kidwell. She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith. Her husband, Bernard
Kidwell, whom she married in 1939, died in 1971.
Mrs. Kidwell is survived by: a daughter, Lois Kidwell, Kinsman; two sons, William
Kidwell, Greenville; and Jack Kidwell, Erie; two sisters, Wanita Harper and Leona

The homemaker was a member of Church of Christ, Hermitage; and Locust Knob (W.Va.)
Church of Christ. She was a charter member of a homemakers club.

He was employed by what was Sawhill Tubular, Wheatland, in the shipping department for
29 years before retiring in 1996.
Mr. Means enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Surviving are: his wife at home, Ruth Halicki Means, whom he married Nov. 24, 1956;
two sons, Michael Means, Bullhead City, Ariz.; and Marc Means, Hubbard; one daughter,
Anita Donahue, Hubbard; two brothers, Charles Means, Sharpsville; and Harry Means,
Mercer; five sisters, Delores Rossi, Sharpsville; LaVerne Newton, Mercer; Shirley

was born Nov. 16, 1914, in Royersford, Pa., to Alvin P. and Elizabeth Jones Harley.
Olive enjoyed playing high school basketball and field hockey in her earlier years.
She was a graduate of Juniata College, Waynesburg, Pa. It was at college that she met
her husband, William. Both majored in music. Olive was a former teacher in Brookfield
Local School District, where she taught music in the elementary school. She was a
member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Surviving are: her husband at home,
William M. Blough, Sr., whom she married Sept. 1, 1938; two sons, William M. Blough,
Jr., Brea, Calif.; and Donald H. Blough, Diamondale, Mich.; one brother, Dr. Wilbert
J. Harley, Ephrata, Pa.; four grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren. She was
preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Raymond and James Harley; and one
sister, Esther Staufer.

Esther Elizabeth LENKNER, Trinity Living Center, Grove City, died at 3:05 a.m. Friday
(2-1-02) in the nursing home, where she had lived for two years. She was 88. Mrs.
Lenkner was born Aug. 17, 1913, in Grove City to Frank "Roy" and Ethel Wise Williams.
She worked in the hostess shop and as a nurse's aide in Grove City Hospital. Mrs.
Lenkner also worked in the hostess shop at Bashline Hospital of Grove City. She was a
member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City. Her husband, Henry Lamont "Mont"
Lenkner, whom she married Feb. 14, 1945, died in January 1985. Her first husband, Earl
Hosack, also preceded her in death.
Surviving are: a stepson, Raymond L. Lenkner, Grove City; a daughter-in-law, Coleen
Lenkner, Grove City; a niece, Sandra J. Stillwagon, wife of Jay Stillwagon,
Harrisville; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Besides her
husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert F. Lenkner; a

Hospital, Pittsburgh, following an extended illness. He was 45. He was born Dec. 10,
1956, in Sharon to John H. and Goldie Mikulin Weldon. Mr. Weldon was a 1975 alumnus of
Hickory High School, Hermitage. A brick mason, he belonged to Bricklayers and Allied
Craftworkers Local Union No. 9. Mr. Weldon was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars
Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage; and also belonged to First Slovak Workingman's
Educational Club, Farrell. He was a fan of both NASCAR and football, rooting for the
Pittsburgh Steelers.
Surviving are: his mother, Goldie Ritter, Hermitage; two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Diane)
Conn, Allentown, Pa.; and Mrs. Donald (Cindy A.) Pacifico, Abbottstown, Pa.; one

retiring, Mrs. Campbell was employed by Grove City College as a housekeeper. She was a
Protestant. Mrs. Campbell was a member of the Ladies of the Moose, Mercer.
Her husband, Charles Campbell, whom she married Nov. 30, 1927, preceded her in death
Oct. 2, 1971.

John A. MARTINKO, 100 N. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage, died at 5:55 p.m. Thursday
(1-31-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended
illness. He was 86. He was born May 5, 1915 in Smith Dale, Pa. to John and Mary
Hovanas Martinko.
A 1935 alumna of Farrell High School, he played football, basketball, and baseball and
was known as a very good player. He later attended the University of Indiana.
Before retiring in 1984, Mr. Martinko was employed by J.C. Penney for 12 years as a
salesman in the auto center. Prior to that, he worked for the former Masury plant of
General American Transportation Corp.; and the former Sharon Transformer Division of
Westinghouse Electric Corp. He attended Central Christian Church, Hermitage. Mr.
Martinko was a member and past treasurer of the Slovak Home, Farrell. He was a past
member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing and, most of all, watching his children play softball and
baseball. Surviving are: his wife at home, Beatrice Gilson Martinko, whom he married
Dec. 31, 1939; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Judith) Thomason, Falls Church, Va.;
Mrs. Nicholas (Dianne) Rebick, Greensburg, Pa.; and Mrs. David (Jonell) Maine,
Hermitage; and seven grandchildren, Jeffery Thomason, Falls Church, Va.; Scott
Thomason and his wife Ewa, Falls Church, Va.; Andrea Hoak and her husband, Richard,
Greensburg; Elaine Rebick, Philadelphia; and Joseph, Brooke and Matthew Maine, all

belonged to the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. She was also a member of

Wilbert D. GRADEN, 1640 Pine Hollow Blvd., Hermitage, passed away Friday (2-1-02) in
the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Health System following a brief illness. He
was 82. He was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Vandergrift, Pa., to Charles and Gertrude Macfoos
Graden.
MR. GRADEN SERVED IN THE ARMY DURING WORLD WAR II IN THE EUROPEAN THEATER OF
OPERATIONS.
He was employed as a slitter for 35 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell
plant, where he retired from the cold roll department in 1982. Mr. Graden was a member
of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon. A volunteer firefighter, he was a life member of the
Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Vandergrift Volunteer
Fire Department. Mr. Graden was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting. Surviving are: his
wife at home, Rita L. Ritter, whom he married May 11, 1946; three daughters, Mrs. Leona
A. Watson, Youngstown; Mrs. Patricia A. Bechtel and her husband Robert, Hermitage; and
Barbara A. Graden, at home; a sister, Mildred Czusack, Vandergrift; four
granddaughters, Elizabeth DelBono, Rita Watson, and Sarah and Rachel Bechtel; and one

causes at 4 p.m. Friday (2-1-02) in her home. She was born in New Castle to Elmer
Eugene and Bertha Watkins Stockman. A 1936 graduate of Union High School, Mrs.
Ringbloom was a homemaker and seamstress. She was an active member of New Wilmington
Alliance Church. Mrs. Ringbloom was an honorary member of the Westminster Towering
Titans, an avid supporter of sports at Westminster College and a fan of Wilmington High
School sports. Her husband, Lyman H. Ringbloom, Sr., whom she married Jan. 27, 1940,
preceded her in death Oct. 11, 1992. Surviving are: two daughters, Betty Jeanne Aiken
and her husband Robert, New Wilmington; and Sheryl "Sherry" Ann Wilkison and her

Farrell. She passed away at 2:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, in the hospital of
Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 41. Born May 6, 1960
in Sharon, Mrs. Rubano was a daughter of Robert L. and Valeria Bohach David. A 1978
graduate of West Middlesex High School, she attended Youngstown State University for
two years. Mrs. Rubano was employed most recently as a cosmetologist and esthetician
at Studio of Hair Designs in Hermitage for 10 years, specializing in care for skin and
nails. She attended several seminars in New York City, Cleveland and Pittsburgh and
acquired many certificates with her esthetician's license. Renee received advanced
training from European Cosmetics in New York City and was instrumental in the education
of young people on care for their skin and nails, as well as cosmetics. She had
previously worked for nine years as a packer for G & T Cone Co. (Joy Cone Co.) in
Hermitage. Her kindness and compassion was easily visible through her countless
efforts to raise money for various charities including Tod Children's Hospital in
Youngstown; the American Cancer Society; Prince of Peace Center in Farrell; and the
Auxiliary of Sharon Regional Health System, where she helped organize many fashion
shows. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell. As a homemaker, Mrs.
Rubano enjoyed cooking and baking and spending time with her family, especially in the
holiday seasons observing many holiday traditions.
Survivors include: her husband, Robert Paul Rubano, whom she married June 4, 1983; one
son, Robert Michael Rubano, at home; her parents, Shenango Township; two brothers,
Robert J. David and his wife Marsha, Hermitage; and Gary A. David, West Middlesex;
her father-in-law, Richard Rubano Sr., Farrell; three brothers-in-law, Richard Rubano
and his wife Nancy, Sharon; Dennis Rubano and his wife Mary Chris, Brookfield; and
Charles Rubano and his wife Tammy, Farrell; one sister-in-law, Lisa Rubano, Sharon; and

Leona Anderson SIZER, 130 Bentley Ave., Sharon, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002,
in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Sizer was born March 8, 1916, in Sharon to Verne Anderson and Cora Turner
Anderson.
She was a 1936 graduate of Sharon High School. A homemaker, she was a member of
Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon. Mrs. Sizer liked to sew, knit and crochet. She
had been a member of Sharon Regional Health System Auxiliary along with several area
bridge clubs. Mrs. Sizer enjoyed golfing and was a charter member of the Friday Night
Couples Golf League at Yankee Run Golf Course in Brookfield Township.
Surviving are: her husband, Carl A. Sizer, whom she married June 14, 1947; three
daughters, Linda Miller, wife of Dallas, Boardman, Ohio; and Susan Sizer; and Sandra
Bedich, wife of George, both Las Vegas; a son, Carl A. Sizer II, husband of Candace,
Sharon; a sister, Margaret Dunn, California; seven grandchildren; and one
great-grandchild. Mrs. Sizer was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers,

graduate of Farrell High School, he retired in 1974 with 37 years of service from the
former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was an
electrical tester.
MR. RUSSO WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II, HAVING SERVED IN THE U.S. ARMY IN THE 363RD
INFANTRY DIVISION IN THE EUROPEAN-AFRICAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Marie Ulan, whom he married Dec. 11, 1941; one
daughter, Karen Russo, Tempe, Ariz.; two sons, Andrew Russo Jr., Fowler; and Robert D.

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Millie A. STAUL, Hermitage, formerly of
what is now Cordia Commons at the Shenango Inn in Sharon and Hamilton Avenue in
Farrell. She passed away unexpectedly at 5 a.m. Monday (2-4-02) in Nugent
Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. She was 81. Mrs. Staul
was born April 27, 1920, in Farrell, a daughter of James and Mary Cara.
She attended Farrell schools. A homemaker, Mrs. Staul dedicated her life to her family
and her church. She was a lifelong member of Farrell Christian Assembly, now known as
First Assembly of God in Hermitage. As an active member of the church, Mrs. Staul
taught Sunday school for more than 50 years and was a member of the Dorcas Fellowship
and a leader of the Girls Missionettes. She also supervised and hosted the Happy
Timers Youth Bible Study in her home. Mrs. Staul was active in the community by serving
each year at election time at her local precinct. She was employed by Farrell Area
School District and worked at the former Pargny School as a cafeteria and recess
supervisor. Millie also worked in the Produce Department at New Wilmington Food
Center, a store owned by her son, John. She enjoyed sports, singing, doing crafts and
baking.
Her husband, John Staul, whom she married Dec. 11, 1937, passed away Dec. 6, 1990.
She is survived by: three sons, John Staul and his wife Nancy, Painesville, Ohio;
Robert Staul and his wife Rita, Yorktown, Va.; and Dennis Staul and his wife Andrea,
Hermitage; seven grandchildren, Mary Lou Miller, John Patrick Staul, Denise Staul,
Brent Staul, Wendy Wyatt, AJ Staul and Cara Staul; and five great-grandchildren, Case
Miller, Matthew Staul, Kaitlyn Staul, Bethany Gomez and Patrick Staul. Besides her
husband, Mrs. Staul was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Chiurazzi; and one
brother, Fred Cara.

Dorothy Gahagan SHAWGO, 810 N. Broad St. Extension, Grove City, passed away peacefully
at 2:50 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in Beaver Falls following an extended illness. She
was 80. Mrs. Shawgo was born June 23, 1921 in Cleveland to E. Guy Gahagan and Mary
Wimer Gahagan.
The lifelong resident of Grove City was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in
Grove City. Mrs. Shawgo and her family owned and operated Shawgo's Christmas Tree Farm
in Grove City for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker, loving mother, grandmother
and great-grandmother. Mrs. Shawgo loved golf and was the ladies golf champion for 17
years at Grove City Country Club. Her husband, Willard E. Shawgo, whom she married
Nov. 27, 1937, is deceased. Surviving are her brother, E.G. "Gus" Gahagan, Stoneboro;
and her sister, Joan Baker, Hollidaysburg, Pa. She also leaves: her sons and
daughters-in-law, John G. and Joan Shawgo, Sewickley, Pa.; and Willard E. Shawgo Jr.
and Patti Shawgo, Beaver Falls. She had five grandchildren and their spouses whom she
loved, Douglas and Yvonne Shawgo, Mercer; Gary Shawgo, Newton Falls, Ohio; Michael and
Bernadette Shawgo, Clinton, Pa.; Jeffrey and Nancy Shawgo, Pittsburgh; and Priestly and

Mr. Finnegan was born July 13, 1919, in New Castle to James R. Finnegan and Ida Lach
Finnegan. He graduated in 1938 from the former Eastbrook High School in Lawrence
County. MR. FINNEGAN JOINED THE U.S. ARMY ON MARCH 1, 1939, AND WAS SENT TO THE PANAMA
CANAL ZONE, WHERE HE SERVED IN THE COAST ARTILLERY FOR 2 YEARS. IN 1940, HE LED FORT
RANDOLPH TO THE ATLANTIC COAST BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND LED THE LEAGUE IN
SCORING. MR. FINNEGAN RETURNED HOME IN NOVEMBER 1941 AND STARTED TO WORK FOR BELL
TELEPHONE OF SHARON AS A STATION INSTALLER. AFTER THE INVASION OF PEARL HARBOR, HE
RE-ENLISTED IN THE ARMY IN JANUARY 1942 AND SERVED 4 YEARS.
HE WAS SENT TO OFFICER CANDIDATE SCHOOL IN FORT BENNING, GA., AND GRADUATED AS A
SECOND LIEUTENANT IN THE INFANTRY. MR. FINNEGAN WAS DISCHARGED IN DECEMBER 1945 AS AN
INFANTRY CAPTAIN. HE REMAINED IN THE RESERVES AFTER WORLD WAR II, LATER ACHIEVING THE
RANK OF MAJOR.
Mr. Finnegan returned to Bell Telephone in Sharon, where he worked for 40 years. The
company transferred him to Pittsburgh in 1960, where he worked for the next 25 years
before retiring and returning to Sharon. He was a life member of American Legion Post
299; and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, both Sharon; and
belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Plum Creek Lodge 799, Pittsburgh. Mr. Finnegan
was featured in an article on his military achievements and experiences in the Panama
Canal published Jan. 16, 2000, in The Herald.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Nancy "Lorraine" Fisher, whom he married Aug. 8,
1947; one daughter, Kim Finnegan and her husband Chuck Longbottom, Philadelphia; and
one sister, Betty McKinney, Ocean City, N.J. He was preceded in death by his parents;
and one son, David Finnegan, who was killed in action during the Vietnam conflict.

The 1932 graduate of Farrell High School earned a bachelor's degree in pharmacy in
1938 from Ohio State University in Columbus, where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma
Phi-Zeta Chapter. A pharmacist, he retired in 1985 after 47 years as co-owner of
Hamilton Drug Co. in Farrell and West Middlesex. He previously worked for Ormerod
Pharmacy in Columbus. He was a member of West Middlesex United Methodist Church; and
Free and Accepted Masons Kedron Lodge 389, also in West Middlesex, where he was a
past master, having served in 1956. He was a life member of Zem Zem Shrine, Erie; and
Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory. He was president of the West Middlesex school
board during the formation of the jointure with Shenango and Lackawannock townships,
and built the first building of the jointure. As director of First National Bank of
Pennsylvania, he started with the West Middlesex branch in 1955. He was a four--year
member of the executive committee of Pennsylvania Pharmaceutical Association and was
recipient of the Eagle Scout Award presented by Admiral Byrd in 1930. He also belonged
to Hideaway Country Club in Fort Myers, Fla. Surviving are: his wife, the former Norma
G. Warner, whom he married Jan. 1, 1945, at home; one son, R. Jeffrey Hamilton, Camp
Hill, Pa.; and two brothers, William L. Hamilton and Samuel C. Hamilton, both
Hermitage. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John A. Hamilton; and

a.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, in Atlanta. She was 84. Ruth was born Feb. 22, 1917, in
Sharpsville to the late William and Emily Smith Perrine. She was a member of the
Roswell Presbyterian Church and a member of the Hampton Roads (Va.) Traffic Club. She
worked 31 years in civil service for the Department of the Defense and, upon
retirement, was the budget officer for Fort Belvoir, Va.
Mrs. Whitmore leaves behind: James Whitmore, her husband of 40 years, at home; sons,
George A. Cooke, Topsfield, Mass.; and Stephen Cooke, Roswell; a daughter, E. Lorraine
Tapia, Brentwood, Tenn.; a sister, Donna Jelley, Sharpsville; four grandsons; three

June 7, 1915, in Greenville to Frank and Rose Vachon Lovesky. A graduate of St.
Michael's High School in Greenville, he retired in 1975 as a supervisor from
Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Muncie, and formerly worked for the former Sharon
Transformer Division of Westinghouse, having served the company in both sites for a
total of 34 years.
Mr. Loviscky was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Muncie and was a past
member of St. Michael's Church in Greenville. He enjoyed sports and from 1954 to 1963
was commissioner for Greenville Little Leagues and Babe Ruth League. He was also
general manager of Greenville Merchants baseball team from 1957 to 1960. An avid
hunter, Mr. Loviscky was a deputy game warden in Mercer County from 1955 to 1963. He
also belonged to Knights of Columbus Council 1446 in Greenville.
Surviving are: his wife of 61 years, the former Helen Long, Muncie; one daughter, Mrs.
Martin (Ann) Spitz, Brownsburg, Ind.; one son, Charles Loviscky and his wife Barbara,
State College, Pa.; five grandchildren, Douglas and Greg Loviscky; and Holly, Tony and
Krista Spitz; and three great-grandchildren, Kendall, Andrew and Abigail Loviscky.
Mr. Loviscky was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Frank

East Lackawannock Township. He was 79. Mr. Bresnahan was born Oct. 7, 1922, in
Sharpsville to James and Anna Bender Bresnahan. He retired in 1979 from Westinghouse
Electric Corp. where he was a supervisor, having worked at the former Sharon
Transformer Division until the plant closed. He was later transferred to the company's
site in Muncie, Ind. Mr. Bresnahan was Catholic by faith.

Larry D. CHANEY, 93 Country Gardens Drive, Eustis, Fla., formerly of Hadley, died at
9:45 p.m. Monday (2-4-02) in Florida Hospital Waterman, Eustis, from a heart attack.
He was 80. He was born in Hadley on Jan. 4, 1922, to Vance and Hazel Reash Chaney. HE
SERVED IN THE NAVY DURING WORLD WAR II.
Mr. Chaney was an electronics tester for Westinghouse for 35 years, and moved to
Eustis in 1989. He was a member of the First Church of God of Eustis. Mr. Chaney was
the past president of the Lions Club and attended schools in Chicago for electronics.
Surviving are: his wife, Louise, at home; a daughter, Diane Nill, Mission Viejo,
Calif.; two sons, Victor, Pittsburgh; and Lon, Tucson, Ariz.; three sisters, Maxine
Moynihan, Sequine, Wash.; Joanne Mitchell, Greenville; and Jeannette Householder,
Hadley; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathleen

Margaret Pauline Lenhart LAZOR Ex-Hermitage homemaker was active at Nugent's A
funeral Mass will be held Friday for Margaret Pauline Lenhart Lazor, a resident of
Nugent Convalescent Home, formerly of Revere Drive, both Hermitage. She passed away at
8:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in the emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was
84. Born Aug. 2, 1917, in New Castle, Mrs. Lazor was a daughter of the late John and
Susan Bubynak Lenhart. Mrs. Lazor attended school in New Castle and was a homemaker.
As a resident at Nugent's, she was a past president of the Resident Council and was
involved in the choir. She was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage and
enjoyed polka dancing, playing bingo and watching football on television.
Mrs. Lazor was very devoted to her family and loved spending time with them,
particularly her grandchildren. Her husband, John A. Lazor, whom she married July 24,
1937, died in May 1974. Survivors include: five daughters, Dorothy Montozzi, Volant;
Mrs. Donald (Rosemarie) Rankin, Austintown, Ohio; Mrs. Ronald (Catherine) Gardlock,
West Middlesex; Mrs. Rocky (Marian) Vadala, Hermitage; and Mildred Lazor, Hermitage;
one sister, Mary Berea, New Castle; one brother, Andrew Lenhart, New Castle; 14
grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband,
Mrs. Lazor was preceded in death by a son, George M. Lazor; two sisters, Helen Russo

Ann M. KIRILA of 503 Bedford Road, Brookfield, died at 10:28 a.m. Tuesday (2-5-02) in
her home following an extended illness. She was 86. Mrs. Kirila was born Jan. 6, 1916,
in Farrell, a daughter of Louis and Josephine Koscuiszko Yourga. She was the business
manager for Kirila Contractors in Brookfield for more than 35 years. Mrs. Kirila was a
member of St. Bernadette's Church in Masury and a charter member of Brookfield Township
Fireman's Auxiliary for more than 50 years, for which she served as a past
president. She graduated from Brookfield High School in 1934. In her spare time, Ann
enjoyed gardening and flowers.
She and her husband, George J. Kirila Sr., whom she married June 29, 1935, traveled
across the United States together attending many firemen's conventions. He died Dec.
29, 1990.
Survivors include: three sons, George Kirila Jr.; and Bill and Ronald Kirila, all
Masury; one brother, Henry J. Yourga; and one sister, Helen Bosnjak, both Sharpsville;
14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Kirila was
preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gene L. K Mirila; and three brothers,
Michael, Joseph and John Yourga.

Sharon High School and in 1963 from Youngstown State University with an associate's
degree in business. She retired in 2001 with 29 years of service as a clerk for the
City of Sharon police department. Mrs. Freund was a member of Order of the Eastern
Star Sharon Chapter 242; and Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 18, Sharon.
She was former member of American Business Women's association and former
secretary-treasurer of Local 2962 ASME. Surviving are: her husband, Edward F. Freund,

Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. He was 84. Born Aug. 12,
1918, in Farrell, Mr. Martin was a son of the late Vincenzo and Gabiele Bunopona
DeMatteo Martin.
Red was a graduate of Farrell High School and the Pittsburgh Traffic School. He was
employed at the former Shenango Inc. of Sharpsville as a mill supervisor and later
worked in its offices in the personnel department. A member of St. Bartholomew's
Church in Sharpsville, he was a third degree member of Knights of Columbus and belonged
to Our Lady of the Valley Council 4003 in Hermitage, where he was the current grand
knight and served in several other offices. He was also a member of Knights of
Columbus Fourth Degree, Sharon Assembly.
Mr. Martin was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the South Pacific with the Navy
Seabees during World War II. He was a member of the 40th Seabee Association; Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 6404, Sharpsville, where he was currently commander and served
in various other offices; and belonged to the American Legion Post 162, Sharpsville.
On June 6, 1942, Mr. Martin married the former Alexandria Combine. She preceded him in
death Oct. 22, 1988. Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Peter (Bernadette A.)
Albers, Bowie, Md.; two grandchildren, Bridget Albers Doerr and Eric P. Albers; and
one great-granddaughter, Hannah Jane Doerr.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by four
sisters, Esther Maselli, Helen DeMatteo, Jenny Delphry and Josephine Zizzo; one half

following an extended illness. He was 81. Mr. Snyder was born Sept. 15, 1920, in what
was Hickory Township, a son of Harry and Crissie Fair Snyder. He was a graduate of
Hickory High School Class of 1938. Mr. Snyder was employed by the former Sharon
Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he worked as an inspector
for 42 years, retiring in August 1982.
During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He belonged to Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 7599, Reynolds. An avid golfer, Mr. Snyder was a member of the
Reynolds and Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars golf leagues, as well as the Inn 62 golf
league. He also enjoyed bowling and belonged to the New Virginia bowling league for
several years. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, gardening and taking leisurely
walks. Paul especially enjoyed his family and spending time with his children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was affectionately known as "Papa Smurf."
He is survived by his wife, the former Arlene L. Kelly, whom he married on Dec. 31,
1942, at home. Mr. Snyder also leaves: six daughters, Mrs. Wayne (Debby) Hoffmann,
Hermitage; Mrs. Frank (Denise) Boca, Clark; Mrs. Paul (Paula) Resele, Newark, Del.;

retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Sharpsville.
Mr. Perriello was a sports fan and enjoyed watching local teams. He was instrumental
in the building of the Sharpsville Little League field. He also loved the outdoors and
enjoyed gardening.
His wife, the former Mary Ann Combine, whom he married on June 22, 1957, survives at
home.

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Robert E. MCCAULEY JR., 20 Woodbine Drive,
Greenville. He died at 12:09 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, in St. Vincent's Hospital,
Erie. He was 52.
Mr. McCauley was born Aug. 14, 1949, in Greenville to Robert E. McCauley Sr. and
Dorothy I. Goldhart McCauley. A 1969 graduate of McKees Rock (Pa.) High School, he was
a licensed auctioneer and an assistant manager for Wal-Mart in Greenville.
MR. MCCAULEY WAS A MEMBER OF VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POST 3374 IN HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP.
He loved horses, motorcycling and golfing, and always loved a good laugh.
Surviving are: his wife, Janelle S. Stangl McCauley, whom he married May 21, 1988,
Hermitage; two daughters, Megan Lenore, Sherman, Texas; and Christina Capwill, New
Jersey; three sisters, Mrs. John (Sherry) Hammersley, Warren, Pa.; Terri Clover, wife
of Gordon Clover Jr., Eastanollee, Ga.; and Mrs. Gary (Jody) Zuschlag, Greenville; two
brothers, Raymond O. McCauley, Greenville; and Gary L. McCauley, Winter Springs, Fla.;
a companion, Cheryl A. Boozer, Greenville; and several nieces and nephews. Mr.

John XXIII Home, Hermitage, formerly of Bethel Park. She passed away at 2:45 p.m.
Tuesday (2-5-02) in John XXIII Home after an extended illness. She was 88. Born Sept.
1, 1913, in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Amorose was a daughter of the late John and Edith E. Page
Vernon. She was a 1930 graduate of Taylor-Alderdice High School in Pittsburgh. A
homemaker, Mrs. Amorose was a former member of St. Thomas Moore Church in Bethel Park;
and Sts. Simon and Jude Church in Scott Township, Allegheny County, and its Legion of
Mary group.
Survivors include: her husband, Joseph Amorose, whom she married Nov. 10, 1930, also a
resident of John XXIII Home; two daughters, Mrs. William C. (Edith E.) Duerr,
Pittsburgh; and Deborah A. D'Amore, wife of Dr. David L. D'Amore, Brookfield Township;
three sons, James A. Amorose, Harwick, Pa.; Robert J. Amorose, Pittsburgh; and Joseph
V. Amorose, Bethel Park; 23 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. In addition to

died Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, 2002, in her residence after a two-week illness. She
was 80. Mrs. Breauchy was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Greenville to William and Mabel
Metzler Riley.
An alumna of Greenville High School, she was a nurse's aide for 20 years at the former
Mercer County Home. After retiring, Mrs. Breauchy did private duty nursing for 15
years.
Surviving are: three daughters, Lavina Ann, wife of Floyd Zahniser, Mercer; Lucille,
wife of Dr. Henry Clay Shilling, Freeport, Pa.; and Marilyn, wife of Douglas Hogg,

He was a lifelong area resident and graduated in 1978 from Sharon High School. Mr.
Chirila later attended the Shenango Valley campus of Pennsylvania State University in
Sharon. He was owner and president of Reliable Insurance Group, Hermitage. He was a
member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage; Professional Insurance Agents
Association; Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 103, Sharon; and was a
former member of Sharon Country Club; and Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce. Ed
enjoyed golf, traveling and spending time with his family and friends, especially his
son. He is survived at home by his wife, the former Ella M. Davis, whom he married
Nov. 1, 1980; and one son, Robert John Chirila. Also surviving are: two brothers, John
A. Hacker and his wife Donna Hacker, Sharpsville; and David A. Hacker and his wife
Cindy Hacker, Sharon; one sister, Karen J. Miller, Brookfield; and several nieces and

Sharon. He passed away at 2:36 p.m. Tuesday (2-5-02) in the hospital of Sharon
Regional Health System following a brief illness. He was 77. Mr. Chisholm was born
July 19, 1924, in Wheatland, a son of James Thomas Chisholm and Hattie Berry
Chisholm. A lifelong area resident, he attended Hermitage schools and was of the
Methodist faith. Mr. Chisholm was employed by the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell
plant as a railroad engineer, where he worked for 34 years. He retired in 1984.
Some of his memberships included the former Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, Sharon;
and VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS POST 5286; AND AMERICAN LEGION POST 160, BOTH FARRELL.
MR. CHISHOLM SERVED WITH THE U.S. NAVY DURING WORLD WAR II IN THE PACIFIC THEATER OF
OPERATIONS. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon L. Chisholm, Cortland; and one son,
Charles D. Chisholm, Sharon. Mr. Chisholm also leaves three grandchildren, Laurel,
Lianna and Jeremy; and one great-granddaughter, Sierra. He was preceded in death by
one sister, Violet Nugent; and five brothers, David, James, Lee, Charles and William
Chisholm.

Sandy Creek Township. He died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, 2002, in the
emergency room of UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 61. Mr. Garner was born March 9,
1940, in Ellwood City, a son of the late Samuel R. and Hallie V. Hoobler Garner. On
Nov. 23, 1962, he married the former Sue Ann Armour, who survives.
Mr. Garner was previously employed by the former Perry Brothers Coal Co. of Jefferson
Township as a heavy equipment operator for 17 years. He was most recently associated
with John Schaff, contractors of Sandy Lake; and Randy Jones Construction of
Stoneboro. Mr. Garner was a member of Sheakleyville United Methodist Church; Free and
Accepted Masons Lake Lodge 434, Sandy Lake; Zem Zem Shrine, Erie; and Scottish Rite's
New Castle Consistory. He also served as director for the Sheakleyville Cemetery
Association.
Mr. Garner is survived by: his wife; a daughter, Mrs. John (Pamela) Scabilloni, Mars;
two sisters, Mrs. Clayton (Margaret) Majors, New Castle; and Mrs. Dennis (Sandra)
McHattie, Butler; and one brother, Lawrence Garner and his wife Sue, Hermitage.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday for Antoinette "Toni" Marie HICKEY, formerly
of 3116 Main St., West Middlesex, a lifetime resident of the Shenango Valley. She
passed away at 5:02 p.m. Tuesday (2-5-02) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, following a brief
illness. She was 85. Mrs. Hickey was born Oct. 22, 1916, in Farrell to Biagio and
Celesta Macciocca Marino. She attended Farrell schools and graduated from Wil-Mar
Beauty School in Sharon. Toni was the owner and operator of the former RITZ Beauty
Salon in downtown Sharon.
Mrs. Hickey was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon and was involved in many
charitable causes. She was instrumental in helping the late Rev. Paul Obenrader and
the Oblate and Benedictine Sisters to found the former Christ the King Church in
Sharon. The church later moved to Farrell and was renamed St. Paul's Church, located
on Fruit Avenue in Farrell, the original site for Sister Bonita's Prince of Peace food
and clothing collection center.
Famous for her Italian cuisine, Mrs. Hickey cooked and helped to organize many
spaghetti dinners to support schools and churches. She also had worked at many area
restaurants including the Italian Home, Paradise Inn and Bello's Pizza Shop. Her
husband of 45 years, Joseph M. Hickey, whom she married Jan. 7, 1947, passed away July
24, 1992. She leaves: a daughter, Kathleen Eberle and her husband Charles; and a son,
Steven M. Tomack Jr., all Hermitage; four grandsons, James B. Eberle, Mark C. Eberle,
Todd J. Tomack and Steven M. Tomack III; two brothers, William Marino, Warren, Ohio;
and Anthony Marino and his wife Paula, San Diego; one granddaughter, Lindsey Denney;
and one great-granddaughter, Mackayla Tomack. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Hickey was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters,
Nancy Ciccki and Philomena Dragask; and two brothers, Lucien and Joseph Marino.

born March 21, 1911, in Sharon, a daughter of Harry and Emma Fisher Green. She was a
homemaker and a former member of First Baptist Church in Sharpsville. Survivors
include: one son, Thomas Ormsby, Lorain, Ohio; one daughter, Kathryn Ormsby, Hermitage;
one grandson; and two great- grandchildren. Also surviving are several nieces and
nephews.
Mrs. Ormsby was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, William, George, John

6, 2002, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was 80. Miss Steh was born
April 7, 1921, in Butler to Frank S. and Elizabeth Emery Steh. She was a clerk at the
former G.C. Murphy Co. in Sharon. Miss Steh was a member of Holy Trinity Church in
Farrell, and its Altar- Rosary Society. She also was an avid bingo player. Surviving
are: three nephews, Joseph Steh, George Steh and Stephen Steh; and three nieces, Judith
Moore; Ilona Paladino and Lenora James.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Irene Steh; and three brothers,

Court, Sharpsville. He died of a massive heart attack at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday (2-5-02) in
Cleveland Clinic. He was 66. Mr. Shaffer was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Sharon to Paul
Roselle Shaffer and Annabelle Miller Shaffer.
On April 2, 1960, he married Jean Louise Barclay of Hubbard, who preceded him in
death.
Paul attended Sharon public schools and served iN THE U.S. NAVY RESERVES. In 1956, he
became a draftsman with the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric
Corp. He later worked for Dresser Industries, living in Pittsburgh; Marion, Ohio;
Florida; Washington State and New Hampshire. After he retired, Paul decided to make
his hobby his vocation. He was an excellent craftsman and built all types of furniture
using the Colonial Method of no nails. His furniture was shipped throughout the United
States and he was featured in several newspaper articles. Paul was commissioned to
build the baptismal font at First Presbyterian Church in Sharon. Besides his wife,
Paul Shaffer was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Shaffer Hurayt.
He is survived by: his sister, Doris Mitchell; a niece, Caryl Mitchell; and a nephew,
Todd W. Mitchell, all San Antonio; an uncle, Kenneth Miller; and an aunt, Viola
Taylor, both Sharon.
