Former New Castle business owner had sister living here
William Oliver Shaw, 9427 Green Needle Drive, New Port Richey, Fla., formerly of New Castle, died
at 11:29 a.m. Wednesday (1-2-02) in Community Hospital, New Port Richey, Fla. He was 75.
He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in New Castle to William O. and Lila Williams Shaw.
Mr. Shaw served in the Navy during World War II.
He was the owner of Valley Auto Spring Co., New Castle.
Mr. Shaw was a member of the First United Methodist Church, New Castle. He also belonged to Timber
Greens Country Club; and the 32nd Degree Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 642, New Castle. He enjoyed
golf and traveling.
His wife, Jean Kelly Shaw, preceded him in death May 18, 1998.
Surviving are: two daughters, Linda Thornton, New Port Richey, Fla.; and Joan Gruitza, Hermitage;
one son, Thomas Shaw, Marietta, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Verla Mae Strobl, Woodland Place Inc., Coolspring Township, formerly of Sharon, died at 5:30 a.m.
Friday (1-4-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 78.
Mrs. Strobl was born Oct. 27, 1923, in Sharon to Walter L. and Cora Swartz Grimm.
She attended First Presbyterian Church, Sharon.
Her husbands, Frank L. Strobl and Lawrence Brest, both preceded her in death.
Surviving are: two brothers, Jack Grimm, Sharon; and Walter Grimm, Hermitage.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Brest.

Herman Hugo HANSON
Retired president of Gilbert's Insurance was WWII vet, civic leader
Herman Hugo Hanson of St. Paul's Home, West Salem Township, formerly of Highland Road, Sharon,
passed away at 10:10 a.m. Friday (1-4-02) in his residence in West Salem Township. He was 84.
He was born Oct. 22, 1917, in Boston to Herman and Lillian Burton Hanson.
Mr. Hanson was a 1939 alumnus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass., where he
received his bachelor of science degree in engineering and business administration.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander. In November 1944,
he was stationed in Sharon at the former transformer division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where
he designed and built torpedoes. Testing of the torpedoes was conducted at the Pymatuning
Reservoir, Crawford County. He also was stationed in Washington, D.C., for a period of time and was
released from active duty in 1946.
Mr. Hanson joined Gilbert's Insurance Agency, Sharon, in 1948 as vice president and general
manager. He retired as president in December 1982 after 34 years of service. He received his
Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter certification in 1959 and was a member and president of the
Mahoning-Shenango Valley Chapter CPCU Association.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon.
A former F.H. Buhl trustee, Mr. Hanson was appointed secretary-treasurer of the trustees in 1967, a
position he held until October 1992. He was also a director and treasurer of the Buhl Club.
A longtime director of the former McDowell National Bank, he was a member of the board of directors
for the Shenango Valley Industrial Development Corp., the Shenango Inn, Shenango Valley Chamber of
Commerce, Mercer County Crippled Children's Society, Mercer County Association for the Retarded,
and the Merchants and Manufacturer's National Bank. He was chairman for the United Fund of the
Shenango Valley and served on the Community Chest campaign. He was a member of the American Red
Cross and the board of directors of what was Sharon General Hospital. He was also a member and past
president of Sharon Country Club.
Mr. Hanson was a member of Sharon Kiwanis Club; the Sharon Social Fishing Club at Lake Muskoka,
Canada; the Century Club at Pymatuning Lake; and the Sharon University Club.
A renowned sailor, he began sailing at 10 years of age on Nantucket Island, Mass., where he raced
and taught sailing at Nantucket Yacht Club. He raced M.I.T. sailing dinghies during his collegiate
years. Later, at the Pymatuning Yacht Club, he won six Thistle Class championships. He also
participated in the Mackinac Races, the Bermuda Race in 1956, and Southern Circuit races including
the Lipton Cup and Governor's Cup. He sailed in many races on the Great Lakes as first mate for
Capt. S.K. Wellman, Cleveland, aboard the 40-foot yawl "Indigo."
He won national championships in the Amphibian Class aboard his own boat, "Luffare," in 1959, 1960
and 1962. He received more than 300 trophies and was inducted into the Intercollegiate Sailing Hall
of Fame, Annapolis, Md. In addition to competitive racing, he and his wife Mary and his children
enjoyed cruising aboard "Luffare" for many years.
In addition to sailing, Mr. Hanson enjoyed traveling and fishing off the Florida Keys at
Islamorada, where he and his wife spent the winters for more than 20 years.
Mr. Hanson met his wife, the former Mary Isabel Gilbert, when he was stationed in Sharon. They
married Feb. 23, 1946 in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon. Mrs. Hanson died March 2, 1999.
Surviving are: two daughters, Dr. Holly H. Johnston, Eastham, Mass.; Mary "Mitzi" Kuster and her
husband, Attorney Thomas W. Kuster, Hermitage; six grandchildren, Casey Pettitt Johnston, Gregory
Warren Johnston, Jennifer Blythe Johnston, Brian Hugh Kuster, Andrew Thomas Kuster and Abbey Leigh
Kuster; three great-granddaughters, Porter Elizabeth Kaboly, Sydney Pettitt Kaboly and Brittany
Amber Johnston.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Alice M. Anderson, Nugent Convalescent Home, 500 Clarksville Road, Hermitage, formerly of Mertz
Towers, Sharpsville, died at 10 p.m. Jan. 3, 2002, in the convalescent home after an extended
illness. She was 85.
Mrs. Anderson was born June 3, 1916, in Homestead, Pa., to John and Catherine Balog Danilovics.
She attended school in Pittsburgh.
Mrs. Anderson was a clerk for Murphy's 5 and 10 Cent Store, Sharon. She also was employed by
Kresky's Department Store and the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.
She attended St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage; and was a member of the Elks Club.
Her husband, Clyde Anderson, whom she married in 1980, died in 1989.
Her first husband, Joseph Kundla, whom she married in 1938, died in 1967.
Surviving are: a brother, William Danilovics and his wife, Wanda, Hermitage; and several nieces and
nephews.
Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Margaret Troncone; and
two brothers, John and George Danilovics.

Gladys C. RICE of 114 Sharon-Bedford Road in West Middlesex passed away Monday evening (1-7-02) in
her residence. She was 99.
Mrs. Rice was born July 29, 1902, in Steubenville, Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Dora Stewart Lyle.
She lived in the Youngstown area for 40 years before moving to West Middlesex in 1968.
Gladys was a 1920 graduate of East Liverpool (Ohio) High School and attended Kent (Ohio) State University.
She was a school teacher for four years in East Liverpool and later a social worker for Mahoning
County Child Welfare for 10 years.
Gladys was a member of New Bedford Presbyterian Church; and belonged to Order of the Eastern Star;
and Daughters of the American Revolution, both New Castle.
Her husband, George E. Rice, whom she married June 3, 1924, died in December 1967.
She is survived by: a daughter, Marie Holtzman, West Middlesex; three grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
A son, George J. Rice; a brother, Oscar L. Lyle; and two sisters, Ada Ketchum and Grace McFarland,
are deceased.

Howard B. DEWYER of One Elston Way, Hermitage, formerly of Seymour, Conn., passed away at 11:10
p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell.
Mr. Dewyer was born in Lincoln Place, Allegheny County, a son of the late Howard B. and Sadie
Samantha Large Dewyer.
Mr. Dewyer attended schools in McKeesport.
He retired in 1988 as a lawn maintenance worker from Heritage Village in Southbury, Conn., after 15
years of service.
Mr. Dewyer was previously employed for eight years as a meat cutter for First National Stores,
Hartford, Conn.; and for seven years for Sikorsky Aircraft, a helicopter manufacturer, where he was
a lead man.
He was a member of First Methodist Church in Ansonia, Conn.; and Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 526
in Elizabeth, Pa.
Mr. Dewyer moved to the Shenango Valley in 1998.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II from Aug. 1, 1944, until his discharge on June
25, 1946.
His wife, Janice I. Dewyer, whom he married April 23, 1947, preceded him in death in October 2000.
Survivors include: one daughter, Dorothy M. Dewyer, Canonsburg, Pa., formerly of Greenville; and
one brother, James M. Dewyer, North Huntington, Pa.
In addition to his parents and his wife, a sister, Ethel Large, preceded him in death.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Harry L. "Bud" WEYER, Daytona Beach, formerly of Sharpsville, died at 9:30
p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in Emory L. Bennett Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Nursing Home after an
extended illness. He was 76.
Mr. Weyer was born May 4, 1925, in Mercer County to Harry L. and Edna Wolford Weyer.
Harry worked all his life as a cook for Tony and Geraldine Mitchell's Italian Cuisine restaurant in
Daytona, after serving in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was an avid lover of cats.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, formerly of Sharpsville; two brothers, James Weyer,
Cleveland; and George Weyer, Orlando Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Ada Weyer Hurl, Sharpsville.
Harry is survived by: one daughter, Cheryl Weyer Rakoci, Wheatland; three grandchildren, Jennifer
Rakoci, Sharon; Luke Rakoci, Pittsburgh; and Kimberly Troutman, Chicago; one granddaughter-in-law,
Melissa Vasconi Rakoci, Pittsburgh, formerly of Hermitage; a great-granddaughter, Lucia Rakoci,
Pittsburgh; and Tony and Geraldine Mitchell, his caretakers, of Daytona Beach.
His daughter, Cheryl, requests prayers in his memory for other families with loved ones who are
miles apart.

Albert G. MALINER of 435 Orchard St. in Sharon died at 4 p.m. Monday (1-7-02) in his home.
He was 77.
Mr. Maliner was born Dec. 5, 1924, in New York City, a son of George and Elizabeth Guyan Maliner.
As a teen-ager, Albert played piano concerts in Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, and at
Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.
He retired in 1983 as a welder from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant, after 33 years
of service.
He was a member of United Steel Workers Union.
After retirement, he was a flea market dealer at Michaelangelo's in New Castle.
His wife, Alice L. Hawkins Maliner, whom he married July 5, 1947, died Feb. 24, 1995.
Survivors include: one son, David and his wife Jeanne, Brookfield; two grandchildren, Amy Neral and
her husband Stephen Jr.; and Matt Maliner and his wife Kristen; and five great-grandchildren, Tyler
Neral, Jessica Neral, Samantha Renee Neral, Kaely Maliner and Reily Maliner.

Mrs. Dignan-Laycock was born June 10, 1911, in Sharpsville to William and Elizabeth Brooks Saunders.
She attended the former Sharpsville Deeter School.
A homemaker, Mrs. Dignan-Laycock enjoyed crocheting, reading, bingo, cooking and, most of all,
spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166 in Hermitage.
Mrs. Dignan-Laycock was preceded in death by her first husband, Dominick T. Dignan, who passed away
March 26, 1956, and her second husband, Bert Laycock, who passed away May 14, 1980.
Surviving are: three daughters, Jerry Dignan, with whom she made her home in Phoenix; Mrs. Charles
(Ruth) Hecox, Nebraska; and Mrs. David (Hope Darlene) Baldinelli, Sharpsville; one son, Charles
Dignan, Phoenix; one sister, Lena Mae Payne, Wintersville, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 28
great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by three sons, James, Robert and
Donald Dignan; three sisters, Mary Redmond; and Violet and Emily Rhodanz; and two brothers, Bill
and Edward Saunders.

A 1965 alumna of Hermitage High School, she earned her degree in 1969 from Slippery Rock University
and retired in 1999 after 30 years as a school teacher for Hermitage School District.
Mrs. Mondich was a member of Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage.
She also belonged to Croatian Catholic Union Lodge 29 in Sharon; American Business Women's
Association; and Hermitage Teachers Association.
Surviving are: her husband, Michael Mondich, whom she married Aug. 4, 1973; and a son, Michael V.
Mondich, both at home in Farrell; her mother, Hermitage; one sister, Mrs. Christopher (Norma) Haas;
and one brother, William Brown, both Columbus, Ohio; one niece, Laura Haas; and one nephew, Jim Haas.
Mrs. Mondich was preceded in death by her father, who died in 1994.

H. King WILLIAMS of 351 Crestview Drive, Franklin, died at 7:15 a.m. Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, in
Cleveland Clinic. He was 59.
Mr. Williams was born Dec. 8, 1942, in Sharon, a son of Robert M. and Helen J. Adams Williams.
He graduated from Sharpsville High School in 1960. He later earned a bachelor's degree in
philosophy from Gannon University in Erie and a master's degree from Slippery Rock University. He
had also attended Pennsylvania State University, St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore and Bowling Green
University in Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Williams worked for the past 30 years at Polk Center, where he was a unit manager at Terrance.
He had also been a unit manager at North Side.
Earlier in his employment at Polk, he served as director of the recreational department, having
started the Picture Bingo Program, which remains in use today. He also coordinated the circus at
the center.
He was a member of St. Stephen's Church in Oil City.
Mr. Williams coached the Franklin High School girls track team during the 1990s and had also
coached elementary basketball at St. Patrick's School.
He was very involved as his children were growing up in Little League baseball, starting in MinorDivision.
He was a "Friday golfer," enjoyed reading, and was an avid runner, participating in many races. One
race that he coordinated was the Williams Clutch in the Gobble Wobble Thanksgiving Day Run in Buhl
Farm park, Sharon.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, the former Mary Ann Lucas, whom he married on July 11, 1970.
Also surviving are: three children, Helen Jean McWilliams and her husband Lawrence, Cuyahoga Falls,
Ohio; John Lucas Williams and his wife Kathleen; and Eileen Williams, all Chicago; two
granddaughters, Regina Anne McWilliams and Laura Jean McWilliams, both Cuyahoga Falls; eight
brothers and sisters, Edward Williams and his wife Carolyn; Mary DeCapua and her husband Sonny; and John Williams and his wife Toni, all Sharon; Elizabeth "Biss" King and her husband Dan, Seattle,
Wash.; George Williams and his wife Joanne, Belleville; Alice Jordan and her husband Dave, Mercer;
Rev. Martin Williams and his wife Laurie, Beaver; and Mike Williams and his wife Florence, San
Diego; and several nieces and nephews.

several years. She was 87.
Mrs. Krivak was born July 15, 1914, in Johnstown, Pa., to George and Mary Grexa Diurba.
She was married to John Krivak, who died in 1969.
Mrs. Krivak was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hermitage.
She enjoyed dancing, playing cards and bowling.
Mrs. Krivak is survived by: her daughter, Mrs. Charles (Mary Ann) Anderson, Phoenix; and a son,
John P. and his wife Bethwyn Krivak, Hermitage; along with four grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two sisters, Sue Bakondi, Greenville; and Evelyn Vario, Sharon; and a

Robert J. LOVE, 6111 Sandy Lake-Polk Road, Sandy Lake Township, died at 1:11 p.m. Wednesday
(1-9-02) in his residence as a result of a fire at his business behind his home. He was 72.
Mr. Love was born Feb. 11, 1929, in Maple Grove, Mineral Township, Venango County, to Robert A. and
Hazel D. Campbell Love.
He attended the former Sandy Lake High School and retired in 1985 after many years of service from
ABEX Corp. in Meadville.
A well-known machinist and gunsmith in the area, Mr. Love was the owner and operator for several
years to the present of Love's Gun Shop and Love's Machine and Tool Co., both Sandy Lake Township.
In his early years, he also farmed. He was of the Protestant faith.
Mr. Love served in the Army Air Corps and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.
He loved working with his hands and helping others.
He married Joan M. McClain on March 12, 1951. She survives at home.
Also surviving are: two sons, Robert W. Love, Polk; and David L. Love, Sandy Lake; one sister,
Marylin J. Fulmer, Polk; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

At one time, he coached Little League baseball in West Middlesex.
A U.S. Marines veteran, Mr. Moss served as a sergeant during the Vietnam conflict and was a member
of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6233, West Middlesex; and Veterans of Vietnam, Meadville.
Surviving are: his wife, the former Susan E. Wilson, whom he married Jan. 25, 1968, at home in West
Middlesex; his father, Charleston; two sons, William E. Moss, West Middlesex; and Paul R. Moss,
Masury; Gretchen Wilson, West Middlesex, whom he lovingly called his "favorite mother-in-law"; four

Miss Nelson was born Nov. 5, 1913, in London to John F. and Sarah P. Rickardson Nelson.

White Oak School, Springfield Township, and ended with Mercer Area School District over a total of
45 years.
Miss Nelson was a lifetime member of Center Presbyterian Church, Pine Township, where she was a
Sunday school teacher, deacon, treasurer of the building fund, Meals-on-Wheels driver and church quilter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Grace E. Weber, Grove City; and Frances
Wertman, Wildwood, N.J.

A retired teacher, she was the oldest living graduate of the former Thompson High School at
Fireside, Ohio.
Mrs. Rearick was a homemaker and a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Toledo. She also attended
Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sharon and was a former member of Zion United
Church of Christ, Fireside, in Bellevue.
Her husband, Walter E. Rearick, whom she married Aug. 24, 1934, in Bellevue, died in 1977.
Surviving are: three sons, L. Wesley Rearick and his wife Lois, Sterling Heights, Mich.; Bryan
Rearick, Lambertville, Mich.; and Norman Rearick and his wife Carolyn, Westerville, Ohio; a

in Sharon.
He was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon.
His wife, the former Helen E. Rindy, whom he married May 28, 1940, survives at home.
Also surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Anthony (Jeanne A.) Costanzo, Sharon; one son, Fredrick K.
Spencer and his wife Patricia, New Castle; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.

Mrs. Teets was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Friendsville, Md., to John and Sarah Hardin Van Sickle.
She had worked for Joy Manufacturing, Franklin. Mrs. Teets previously was a cook for the former
Humes Hotel, Mercer.
She was a Protestant. Mrs. Teets was a 4-H leader in the Franklin area.
Her husband, Ivan L. Teets Sr., whom she married March 28, 1936, died Jan. 14, 1995.

A homemaker, she was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon.
Mrs. Verholek enjoyed gardening and was an accomplished seamstress.
On June 1, 1940, she married Michael Verholek. He preceded her in death June 2, 1998.

and his wife Donna, Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Emma Yazvac, Bentley House, Hermitage; five

formerly of 1122 Stambaugh Ave., Sharon. He died at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, in the
hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 90.
Mr. Dryer was born Dec. 2, 1911, in Tuskegee, Ala., to Roe and Parthenia Akers Dryer.
He retired after many years of employment with the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant.
Mr. Dryer was a former member of New Hope Baptist Church in Farrell.
His wife, the former Gwendolyn Atkins, whom he married Feb. 24, 1962, died Feb. 5, 1976.
Surviving are: one son, Joseph Edward Dryer and his wife Earlean; and one granddaughter, Gwendolyn
Dryer, all Sharon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
A sister, Sarah Kemp, 92, of Clinton, Md., formerly of Farrell, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday,
Jan. 9, 2002, in a Washington, D.C., nursing home. She will be buried Jan. 16 in the Washington
area. Mrs. Kemp and Mr. Dryer were the last of 10 siblings.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Kemp and his eight other siblings, he was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Jordan was born Aug. 4, 1947, in Sharon, where he was reared, a son of the late William and
Caroline Manilla Jordan.
He served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.
In 2001, Mr. Jordan retired from the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation in Erie,
where he was a counselor for 30 years.
He was a member and past president of the Erie County Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association
and also served on its board of directors.
Mr. Jordan was an active member of the Erie Maennerchor Club.

SOUTH WALES, N.Y. -- Florence Anna CAMPBELL of 50 North Ave., West Seneca, N.Y., formerly of Wolf
Creek Township, passed away at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, in her daughter's home in
South Wales. She was 89.
Mrs. Campbell was born May 21, 1912, in Jackson Center to the late John Rankin Moon and Elfie
Blanche Turner Moon.
Mrs. Campbell graduated from Mercer High School and from the former Sharon Business School.
She and her late husband, Leroy Campbell, whom she married June 28, 1932, operated a Guernsey dairy
farm in Centertown for 40 years. She then lived in Grove City for 10 years prior to moving seven
years ago to United Church Manor, a senior housing facility in West Seneca, to be near her daughter
and family.
Mrs. Campbell worked as a tax collector for Wolf Creek Township and as a tipstaff at Mercer County Courthouse.
Throughout her lifetime, she was active in many church activities as a former member of East Main
Presbyterian Church in Grove City and, in recent years, First Presbyterian Church of West Seneca.
Mrs. Campbell was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing 500 cards. She loved spending time with her family.
She was a 50-year member of Millbrook Grange.
Surviving are: her daughter, Mrs. George (Ruthie L.) Hunt, South Wales; a son, Allen L. Campbell
and his wife Nala Campbell, Brewer, Maine; three sisters, Della Dick, Jackson Center; Luceille
Urmson, Transfer; and Blanche McClearn, Stoneboro; five brothers, Kenneth Moon, Jackson Center;
Wallace Moon, Williamsport, Pa.; Raymond Moon, Mercer; Paul Moon, Waterford; and Russell Moon,

Margaret Louise Young MANSELL, 507 Waugh Ave., New Wilmington, died at 12:30 p.m. Friday (1-11-02)
in her residence. She was 91.
She was born Sept. 8, 1910, in New Castle to Charles Herman and Una May Brown Young.
A 1925 alumnus of New Castle High School, Mrs. Mansell graduated in 1929 from Westminster College,
New Wilmington.
A homemaker, she married Thomas V. Mansell, July 27, 1934. He died March 1, 1997.
Mrs. Mansell was an active member and elder of New Wilmington Presbyterian Church. She was a member
of the church Women's Association and its Cora McElwee Sunday school class. She also was a former
Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Mansell was a former president of the Wives of the Lawrence County Bar Auxiliary and was a
former Rotary Club Citizen of the Year.
Surviving are: two daughters, Mary Louise Scott Morton, and her husband, Michael, Lexington, Mass.;
and Margaret Elizabeth "Betsy" Morton, and her husband Terry, Annapolis, Md.; two sons, Thomas S.
Mansell, and his wife Patricia, New Castle; and Charles Y. Mansell, and his wife Pam, New
Wilmington; a sister, Nell Herchenroether, Ben Avon, Pa.; nine grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Dorothy Young and
Jean Uber.

Raymond J. SAULINE Sr. of Hubbard died Thursday (1-10-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. He was 78.
He was born Feb. 3, 1923, in Hubbard to Joseph J. and Margaret Pannunzio Sauline.
Before retirement in 1981, he was an engineer for Conrail for 40 years. He was a member of the
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers.
A lifelong Hubbard resident, Mr. Sauline was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Hubbard.
A World War II Army veteran, Mr. Sauline was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3767, Hubbard.
Mr. Sauline enjoyed gardening.
His wife, Yolanda Petuch Sauline, whom he married Oct. 31, 1947, died Sept. 16, 2000.
Surviving are: two sons, Joseph J. Sauline, Westerville, Ohio; and Raymond J. Sauline Jr., Hubbard;
two stepsons, Emerick Zuccaro, Twinsburg, Ohio; and Ronald Zuccaro, Sharpsville; a brother, John
Sauline, Newago, Mich.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, James P. Sauline.

Jane Lyman VOYTEN of 7642 Haverhill Lane, Canton, Mich., formerly of Sharon, passed away at 11:30
p.m. Saturday (1-12-02) in her home following an extended illness. She was 72.
Mrs. Voyten was born July 29, 1929, in Sharon, a daughter of Raymond "Si" and Florence Gibbons
Lyman.
She was an alumna of Sharon High School Class of 1947 and graduated from what is now Slippery Rock
University, where she earned a bachelor's degree and her teaching certificate.
Mrs. Voyten was employed as an elementary school teacher for Sharon Area School District in its
Wengler Avenue School.
She enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, bridge and, most recently, the computer. She enjoyed
designing her own greeting cards with her personal computer, as well as corresponding through
e-mail with many friends.
Mrs. Voyten was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth Mich., and was a
former member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon.
Her husband, William L. Voyten, whom she married Nov. 27, 1954, survives at home.
She also leaves: three daughters, Barbara Ziberna and her husband Keith, Raleigh, N.C.; Carol
Pisarski and her husband Jan, Canton, Mich.; and Peggy Shanabarger and her husband John, Fort
Wayne, Ind.; and one sister, Marion Nemetz, Hermitage.
She was the proud grandmother of seven grandchildren, Brian and Matt Ziberna; LeeAnn and Katie
Pisarski; and Rachel, Mary and Ann Shanabarger.
Mrs. Voyten was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Florence Ann Scragg.

She was a member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell.
Surviving are: two sisters, Helen Stefanac, Sharon; and Elizabeth "Betty" Repas, Farrell; and a
brother, John Drabick, Sharon.
Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Miss Drabick was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Steve and George Drabick; and two
sisters, Mary Kovach and Ann Wasko.

Monsour Medical Center in Jeannette.
Born May 5, 1917, in McKeesport, he was a son of the late John and Anastasia Souanka Sherry; father
of the late William B. Sherry; and brother of the late Walter, Michael, Steve and Eva Sherry. He
also was predeceased by two grandchildren.
He was a retired tool and die maker for Teledyne Firth Sterling, McKeesport; a member of U.S.
Steelworkers Local Union; and was a cook in the CC NF-I, Camp Roosevelt in Edinburg, Va.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Markley Sherry; a son, Ira A. Sherry, McDonald, Pa.; a
daughter, June Dunn, Grove City; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Andrew

A funeral service will be held Wednesday (1-16-02) for Harvey Leon DAWSON of 1826 Powers Ave.,
Sharpsville. He passed away at 2:44 a.m. Sunday (1-13-02) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health
System. He was 71.
Mr. Dawson was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Farrell, a son of the late James Harvey and Celina Yvonne
DeBrakeleer Dawson.
Mr. Dawson was a 1948 alumnus of Farrell High School, where he was a member of the marching band. A
1953 graduate of Grove City College, he received a bachelor of arts degree in education and retired
in the 1980s from Sharon School District where he was a special education teacher for more than 27 years.
An avid sports fan, he was the voice of the Sharon High School Tigers, announcing home games for
many years. He also was a member of the lines crew at the games.
He was a basketball season ticket holder at Sharon High School and Farrell High School and was a
lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
Mr. Dawson was a life member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103, where he
was the exulted ruler in 1974. He served as secretary for many years and was on a number of
committees. He was also a member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Sharon Lodge 347.
He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church, Hermitage; and Sharpsville Baptist Church. He
enjoyed traveling, particularly to California, Nevada and other western states. He had a lifelong
love of science fiction and was a movie buff.
Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Nancy Ann) Brown, Pittsburgh; two sons, Lee Daniel Dawson
and his wife Stephanie, Windsor, Ontario, Canada; and Pete Michael Dawson and his wife Jamie,
Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer, Stephanie, Amanda, Melissa, Janine, Matthew, Joshua and
Savannah; and three nieces, Debra Bobish, Wendy Chapin and Kelly Guido.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Yvonne McDonald Tessmer, who
died in October 2001.

Drive and formerly of Tamarack Drive, both in South Pymatuning Township. She passed away at 11:30
p.m. Sunday (1-13-02) in her home because she was ready to join her husband, Earl Lee Swartz, whom
she lost last June. She was 89.
Mrs. Swartz was born Dec. 28, 1912, in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of James F. and Jessie Gibson
Stoyer. She was a 1929 graduate of the former Transfer High School.
She was employed at the former Stafford's Cleaners in Sharpsville; and the former Peoples Cleaners
of Sharon for many years.
She was a charter member of Living Word Church of Brookfield in Masury.
Mrs. Swartz was a former member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Hermitage, and still
belonged to their friendship circle and Pollyanna Guild.
She also was a member of the South Pymatuning Ladies Club and the South Pymatuning Volunteer
Fireman's Auxiliary.
Some of her hobbies included reading, sewing and crocheting.
Her husband of 72 years, Mr. Earl Lee Swartz, whom she married June 18, 1929, passed away on
Tuesday, June 19, 2001.
She is survived by one daughter, Mr. Joseph (Martha L.) Simons, South Pymatuning Township; one son,
Timothy Earl Swartz of Shiloh, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. J. Wallis (Marian) Stoyer and
Mrs. Joseph (Agnes) French, both of South Pymatuning Township; 10 grandchildren; and nine
great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Wallis Stoyer; and Robert R.M. Stoyer.
SWARTZ Mrs. Earl Thelma S., 89, of 2876 Saranac Drive, formerly of Tamarack Drive, both South
