On Thursday evening, Feb 16, a very pleasant surprise was tendered Hiram
Palmer of this borough by the members of the First Baptist church, in honor of
his 90th birthday. About 100 members and friends gathered in the church
auditorium and listened to a program of music and old songs. The pastor of
the church gave a few fitting remarks, then presented Mr. Palmer with a
birthday book in which was written the names of those present.
After a few interesting stories of his earlier days by Mr. Palmer, the
sashes were thrown open and in the side room of the church, which was
tastefully decorated, the guests enjoyed a bucet luncheon. A very pretty
sight was the birthday cake with its 90 red candles.
Daddy Palmer, as he is affectionately called by most of us, was taken
completely by surprise, and seemed to enjoy the evening as well as any
present. Tho in his 90th years he is hale and hearty and as the pastor of the
church expressed it, We hope that then years from tonight we can meet again
like this in honor of your 100th birthday. Shinglehouse Mail.

On Thursday, March 16 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Parker, at
Coryville, Mr. Orin P. Crandall celebrated his one hundredth birthday in the
presence of relatives and friends. Among the guests were a son, Mr. Eugene
Crandall and wife of Buffalo, N.Y., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Foote of Olean, N.Y.,
the latter being a daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Parker, Coryville and Mr. Gene
Cooper of Turtle Point. Mrs. Maria Rice of Eldred, a daughter and two sons,
Messers Geo. Crandall of Bradford and Edward Crandall of Sheffield were unable
  to be present.
Mr. Crandall in spite of his advanced age is active and in good health. He
can relate many interesting events especially those of his early and middle
life. On this occasion he spoke of witnessing the remarkable falling of stars
in 1834, also of voting for his first president James K. Polk.
One of the features of the day was a shower of post cards which he was able
  to read and enjoy.
Mr. Crandall was born in Tioga Co. during James Monroe's administration.
When one considers that our new republic, extending as far west as the
Mississippi at that time, had just achieved a sound, financial basis for the
first time and that we were entering upon our first season of real,
prosperity, it is interesting to note the wonderful changes which have taken
place in our country during this one lifetime.
