On Monday last W.H. Wetenhall celebrated his 70th birthday anniversary, and
in honor of that event his daughter, Mrs. A.H. Simons, invited in several of
the older members of Smethport Lodge, No. 359, I.O.O.F., to a seven o'clock
dinner. Mr. Wetenhall is one of he few charter members left of Smethport
Lodge, which was instituted in August, 1881, and has always affiliated with
the local lodge, and is, we believe, its oldest member, and it was befitting
that he should have gathered about his board on this auspicious occasion a few
of his old time lodge friends as a reminder of the struggle these pioneer
wearers of the three links had in keeping Odd Fellowship in bloom in Smethport
a third of a century ago. Besides the host of the evening there were gathered
about the table on this pleasant occasion the following persons: H.W. Rubin,
H.M. Choate, A.R. Cory, Charles Lemmler, W.G. Holder, S.R. Lindsley, C.J.
Vanblad and George Schroth. After the elaborate collation had been thoroughly
discussed, H. W. Rubin arose, and in a few well chosen remarks presented a
beautiful easy chair to the host, to which Mr. Wetenhall replied in a feeling
manner. After which the evening was passed in a most delightful manner in
social intercourse, and at cards. At a reasonable hour the company departed
for their respective homes, with profuse wishes that Mr. Wetenhall's life
might be spared to celebrate many more just such happy occasions and that of
Monday evening.
