Herald/Standard February 1926
James S. Hebb, second son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hebb of Hopwood, was
Saturday afternoon awarded a silver medalby the government for heroism
displayed last summer when he saved a woman from drowning in the James River
just below Fort Eustace, Va., where he is a soldier of four year's standing in
the regular army.
Hebb is 26 years old, and lived for the greater part of his life in Hopwood
where he was educated in the North Union public schools. He was drafted
during the war, but never served as he came in the 18-45 age limit. Four
years ago he enlisted and has been stationed since at Fort Eustace.
The girl he saved was in swimming when she was caught in the swift
current. Cries of an 11 year-old girl caught the attention of Hebb who dived
in after the drowning woman, dragged her to shore in a swift undertow.
John Hebb, his father, is a well-known carpenter by trade and inventor by
profession. He was the originator of the Hebb Coke Drawer, much in use about
the various mines in this vicinity.
