UNIONTOWN STANDARD MONDAY EVENING ,APRIL 16,1923
MAN WHO SHOT HIS WIFE HAS A SLIGHT CHANCE TO RECOVER.
John Barnes, aged 47, a resident of Evans Street, who shot and killed his
wife at the corner of Mifflin Avenue and Connellsville Street Sunday afternoon,
may recover.
In Uniontown Hospital, where Barnes was taken after he had sent a bullet
through his brain, it was stated in a bullitan at noon that Barnes' condition,
although critical last night, had taken a turn for the better this morning and
there was a slight chance of his recovery.
Barnes shot his wfe three times following a domestic quarrel. The couple
seperated several months ago. Mrs. Barnes going to the home of her father Lucius
Martin in Connellsville. Later she returned to Uniontown and went to work at
Hagan's restaurant (across from the RR Station).
Shortly after the seperation Barnes is said to have written his wife some
threatening letters. She made an information against the man before Alderman
Joseph J. Michael and at a hearing Barnes was held for court. Yesterday both
were seen approaching each other in Connellsville Street, but as Mrs. Barnes
drew near she attempted to cross the street to avoid the man. This seemed to
enrage Barnes all the more and stepping up to her, he fired three shots. Then he
sent the fourth bullet to his brain.
A large crowd gathered around the bleeding bodies. The police patrol hurried
the couple to Uniontown Hospital but Mrs. Barnes was dead before her arrival.
