3 Story Frame Home Burns Down on Mt. Alverno Rd.
Fire totally damaged a three-story unoccupied frame house at
Mt. Alverno rd., Middletown Township early this morning. Firemen
of four companies were called from their beds at 3:45 a.m. The
firemen battled the raging flames for two and half hours.
The building formally part of the SAMUEL D. RIDDLE estate
and known locally as "Riddle's chicken farm," was purchased
about a month ago by LAWRENCE B. VOGEL, 813 Mitchell av.,
Morton. The owner had not occupied the building.
Firemen were summoned when a child in the THURSTON
KNIGHT family, of Mt. Alverno rd., was awakened by the flames
and roused his parents. The frame building burned rapidly and
illuminated the sky as fire consumed the dry wood. Firemen
could not bring the flames under control but they were able to
prevent a large barn and three other buildings from catching fire.
Firemen could not get their engines near the house, because
of a weak wood bridge, and were forced to lay hose lines for
more than 800 feet.
VOGEL told firemen that his house had been damaged by
vandal recently. Windows were broken, doors destroyed and
radiators were stolen. Fire companies is service were Lenni,
Middletown, Lima and Aston-Beechwood. JAMES BERRY was
in command of the firefighters.
