The Clearfield Progress September 29, 1936
More than 325 members and friends of the Frederick Shepherd Family
Reunion Association gathered recently at the old Shepherd homestead located
between Cherry Tree and Westover for their 100th annual reunion.
A sumptuous spaghetti dinner, cooked by Samuel Biss, was served at noon
on a 150-foot table in the apple orchard of the Shepherd property on which
Frederick Shepherd settled in September, 1836.
The affair had a double significance for two of those attending. They
were Mrs. Jane Shepherd, widow of Nathaniel Shepherd, who celebrated her 84th
birthday anniversary, and Warren J. Shepherd of Los Angeles, Cal., who is
visiting in the district.
Guests came from Ohio, Georgia, Michigan, New York and California in
addition to many points in Pennsylvania to be present for the centennial
celebration.
Warren Shepherd was the afternoon's principal speaker and reported
favorable progress on the family genealogy. He also related some interesting
and thrilling incidents of the Spanish-American War, having served in Company
D, Seventh U.S Infantry. Mr. Shepherd was awarded the Congressional Medal of
Honor for his services in the Battle of El-Caney, Cuba, July 1, 1898.
He told how he had laid two hours in the "dead house of the yellow fever
hospital" at Siboney, Cuba, and closed with the incident of finding a jewel
box valued at $100,000 of Madam Galli Ourzi under a tree near a highway in
California. He returned the jewels to their owner without asking for a reward,
he said.
Clyde Shepherd of Westover R.F.D. who arranged the reunion event, is
president of the family association.
