Three York County Residents Killed in Crash Near Oxford
Vehicle hits Jack-knifed Tractor Trailer

Three York County residents lost their lives and seven other occupants of a
station wagon were injured when the vehicle crashed into a jack-knifed tractor-
trailer on Rt. 10 two miles north of Oxford, at 5:50pm, Saturday (September 3,
1961).

The deaths increased the total of highway fatalities in Chester County this
year to 33.

William J. Wyatt, 23, of Fawn Grove, operator of the station wagon, was killed
instantly.

Mrs. Danie Ellen Testerman, 38, also of Fawn Grove, died 45 minutes after
admittance to Community Hospital at Jennersville. Her son, William R., 9, who
was taken to Delaware General Hospital, Wilmington, died there at 9:30pm Sunday.

Mrs. Margaret Wyatt, 21, wife of the station wagon operator, who suffered a
fractured arm and shock, and William L. Testerman, 42, husband of the dead
woman, are in Community Memorial Hospital at Jennersville. Mrs. Wyatt's
condition was listed as serious, and Testerman who is in shock, was reported as
fair.

Allen Wyatt, 7-month-old son of the Wyatt's was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital,
Lancaster. He suffered a fractured skull, and was listed today as in fair
condition.

Treated at the Jennersville institution and discharged yesterday after
observation were the four children of the Testermans, who suffered shock- Fred
12, Rudy 17, Mary 15 and Louise 10.

The injured were taken to the hospitals in the Oxford Fire Co. and West Grove
ambulances. The bodies of those who died in the accident were removed to the
Lewis B. Cauffman Funeral Home, Oxford.

Trooper Michael J. Batutis, of Avondale State Police, said the accident
occurred when a southbound tractor-trailer driven by Joseph V. McCoy, First
Avenue, Sadsburyville, jack-knifed on the rain slicked Rt. 10 when it rounded a
curve at a point where the highway has steep slanted banks. Wyatt, the trooper
said, had no room to go around the rig as it skidded broadside toward his
oncoming station wagon. The two families were on their way for a holiday visit
to Wyatt's mother-in-law, Mrs. George Shattley, of West Grove.

McCoy was held in $1,000 bail, pending a further investigation, Ernest E.
Schneider, deputy county coroner, said an inquest would be held.
