Ancient Inquest Tells Gruesome Tale
ASSUALTED WITH STOME VALUES AT ONE CENT, VICTIM DIED NITETY SEVEN YEARS AGO TO-
DAY IN KENNETT.
Going over some old papers yesterday, William P. Sharpless found a record
of a Coroner's inquest made ninety-seve years ago. The penmanshipis good and
the spelling correct, and the story told in clear detail:
Chester county, Pa.- An inquisition indented, taken in Kennett township
and county of Chester, the twenty-first day of January, 1819. Before me Joel
C. Bailey, Coroner of the county of aforesaid, upon the view of the body of
George Shivery, then and there lying ffeaf upon the oath of John H. Quinn and
solen affirmations of oshua Taylor, Esq., James Cropson, John Taylor,Jr.,
Ezekiel Baily, John Way, Stephen Webb,John Craig,Esq.,Thos. Seal, Jacob Baily,
Jacob Taylor and Gilpin Bennett, good and Lawful men of the county agoresaid,
who, being sworn and affirmed and charged to inquire, on the part of the
Commonwealth, when, where how and after what manner the said George Shivery
came to his deaht, do say upon their oaths and affirmation that one Jehu
Simmons, Jr., late of the township and county aforesaid, stonemason, not
having God before his eyes, but being moved and seduced by the instigation of
the devil on the 16th day of January, in the year aforesaid, at eleven
o'clock at night of the same day, with force and arms at or near the house of
the said George Shivery, in the township and county aforesaid,, in and upon
the aforesaid George Shivery then and there being in the peace of God and of
the said Commonwealth, feloniously, voluntarily made an assualt and that the
aforesaid Jehu Simmons,Jr., then and there with a certain stone of the value
of one cent, which he , the said Jehu Simmons, Jr., then and there held in his
hand, the aforesaid George Shivery in and upon the forehead of the said George
Shivery then and there violently feloniously, voluntarily struck and pierced
and gave to the said George Shivery one mortal wound of the breadth of one
inch, of which said mortal wound the aforesaid George Shivery then and there
lingered until the 18th inst., about 10 o'clock of the night of the saidd day
and died an so the said Jehu Simmons, Jr., then there feloniously killed and
murdered the said George Shivery against the peace and dignity of the said
Commonwealth.
In testimony whereof, we the aforesaid jury, as well as the Coroner
aforesaid, have to this inquistion put our seal o the day and at the place
first above mentioned:
