Manslaughter at Coatesville.- On Sunday, last, March 7th, a colored man named
John Henson, aged 29 years, was at the vendue (sic) of Augustus C. Brown,
residing on Quarry Street, Coatesville. While there it is supposed that a
quarrel ensued and the two came to blows in which Brown struck Henson with a
club and injured him so severely that he died from the injuries on the
Wednesday following. Deputy Coroner T. B. Umstead, of Coatesville, was
notified of the fact and at once proceeded to the house in which Henson had
been stopping, and where he died. The Deputy Coroner empanelled a jury
composed of the following named gentleman: Thomas Lewis, Morris Rambo, George
G. Myer, Joseph C. Kauffman, Harry C. Nields and Charles Gill. After hearing
a number of witnesses, and having an examination of the body made by Drs.
Housekeeper and Morison, the jury rendered a verdict that death had been
caused by a blow or blows from a club in the hands of Augustus C. Brown, after
which Brown surrendered himself to the Coroner, and was committed to prison.
