Toohey Son Burned to Death
A four year old son of Mr. Michael Toohey, of Conemaugh borough, was burned to death
on Wednesday morning last, during the absence of his parents, who were attending the
forty hours devotion then in progress at the Catholic church. The child had been
left in charge of the older children of Mr. Toohey, but child like, they soon forgot
their trust, and leaving the little fellow in the house by himself, went in pursuit
of amusement elsewhere. During their absence the helpless child possessed himself of
some matches, and, as might be expected, set fire to his clothes, and the terrible
result stated above was the consequence. No person was near at the time to subdue
the flames, and if we are rightly informed, nothing was known of the shocking affair
until the innocent little victim had been literally roasted alive. What a terrible
lesson does this sad and lamentable catastrophe convey to the parents of young and
helpless children, and how unremitting in their watchfulness should all be who have
little ones under their care or control. This is indeed a sad warning, but it is to
be hoped that it will not be without some good results.
