HOME GUARDSMEN DRILL

Company M, Juniata and vicinity home guardsmen, met in the Juniata Young Men's
Christian association rooms last evening for their first drill. Captain W. V.
Wester lined the guardsmen up for an introduction to military movements and in a
brief business session announced a few appointments of non-commissioned
officers. They are W. E. Roy, first sergeant; John Sandin, sergeant; K. W.
Karlson, first corporal; Earl Henderson, first musician; Nathan Shoemaker,
second musician. First and second lieutenants will be elected by the company on
the evening of Wednesday, May 22, and from that date the regular meetings and
drills will occur on Wednesday evenings of each week, instead of Mondays, as was
first planned.
Many of the members have had previous experience in military drill and the
company showed up well in footwork last night. The men are entering into the
patriotic movement with enthusiasm and company M gives promise of rapidly
shaping up for any emergency.
The Home Defense rifle team had a tryout at the Y.M.C.A. to qualify for the
team to shoot against the big "Y" team. They accepted a challenge.

PRIVATE CARL AUKER [photo]

Carl Auker, of 2809 Oak avenue, is one of the numerous Altoona boys who are
now serving their country "somewhere in France." Some moths ago he became fired
with the patriotism that has caused a thousand or more of the young men of the
city to volunteer for service and he enlisted in the Thirty-fifth Engineers on
December 11, 1917. A short time later he went to France with his command.
Recent letters from the soldier boy include his praise for the army, that the
boys are well fed and quartered and that they are doing a great work at their
calling.
