Altoonan Gets Bronze Star For Heroism
 (Special to Altoona Mirror)

WITH THE 25TH INFANTRY DIVISION, Korea - The award of the Bronze Star medal
with letter "V" device for heroic achievement to Sgt. Clarence V. Bonsell of
126 Sixth avenue, Altoona, has been announced by Maj. Ira P. Swift, 25th
division commander. Sgt. Bonsell received the award for outstanding service
against the enemy near Chubong, Korea, while serving with the medical company
of the 27th infantry regiment, a part of the 25th division. Sgt. Bonsell
distinguished himself when the unit he was serving as an aid man launched an
assault on strong enemy positions. Despite intense small arms, automatic
weapons and mortar concentrations, he advanced across a large open area to the
side of a wounded soldier. After administering emergency treatment under the
direct observation of the enemy, he carried the helpless man some 100 yards
through the withering crossfire and bursting shells to a defilade position.
"Sgt. Bonsell's valorous action," the citation read, "reflects great credit on
himself and the United States army."
