The Somerset Herald. (Somerset, Pa.) February 10, 1892
Death of Susan Allison, Who Had 100 Black Cats, and Told Fortunes.
The following dispatch, credited to Somerset, appeared in a Pittsburgh paper one day
last week: "The death in Shade township, Tuesday, of Susan Allison, aged 54 years,
removes one of the most unique characters that ever lived in the mountain. She owned
and managed a large stock farm for thirty years. The chestnut hedge fences, the
large one-story log house almost covered with vines, gave her home a preternatural
appearance. Many stories of witchcraft and conjuring are related, of which she was
the medium.
She never failed to cure toothache or take the fire from severe burns. As a
veterinarian she was considered infallible; botts, colic, distemper and sweeny were
cured instantly by incantations or words. She was considered an adept mind-reader,
could fortell the exact date of death or marriage, and in several instances, caused
stolen goods to be returned. Among her domestic animals, cats were the objects of
her tenderest care and attention, and at no time of her life was she the mistress of
less than one hundred of the feline tribe of the blackest hue."
A few years ago Miss Allison was married to one John Shaffer, since dead, and
removed to Bedford county, and was a resident of one of the eastern townships of
that county at the time of her death.
