Rev. Clair Beatty Retires from Ministry; Last Nine Years Spent at Carlisle
Carlisle (Ohio) - Rev. Clair E. Beatty closed out at 38-year career in the
ministry Sunday, the last nine at the New Jersey Presbyterian Church, and a
large congregation turned out to hear the last sermon of the respected and
well-liked man. The Lion's Club of Carlisle paid respect to Rev. Beatty,
since he is a Lion, by attending Sunday's service. Many visitors of Rev.
Beatty's earlier churches and visitors of other churches also attended.
Rev. Beatty was recently elected for his third term to the position of
Stated Clerk in the Miami Presbytery. He is editor of the Buckeye Endeavor
which is printed in Miamisburg and distributed state-wide. He serves on the
Board of Trustees of the International Society of Christian Endeavor Union and
a former moderator of the Presbytery. In 1974, he and his wife, Betty,
attended the World Christian Endeavor Convention at Essen, Germany.
Born in 1915 near Dayton, Penn. he grew up with four brothers and two
sisters. Rev. Beatty said, 'I had gone to church ever since my mom and dad
took me there.' He was baptized at the Concord Presbyterian Church but later
joined the Glade Run Presbyterian Church. Little did the minister of that
church, Rev. G. W. McIntyre, know that the young Beatty would be the eleventh
boy to be ordained as a minister under him.
Rev. Beatty attended the Dayton (Penn.) Vocational High School and he
said that a vocational school was 'something new in those days.' He
graduated in 1933. He then attended Highland Junior College in Highland, Kan.
after 'the president of the school picked me up in Pittsburgh and took me
there and supported me for two years.'
In 1935, Rev. Beatty transferred to Ashland College and he stayed in the
Ohio school two years until earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree. After
another year at the Ashland Theological Seminary, Rev. Beatty transferred to
Western (now Pittsburgh) Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. In 1940, the
long road of education ended as he received a masters in Sacred Theology.
Licensed to preach by Kittanning Presbytery in Kittanning, Penn., in
1939, he was ordained in 1940 by the Steubenville Presbytery at the Bethel
Presbyterian Church in Slaineville, Ohio. He served as minster there for four
years when he was asked to serve as executive secretary of the Ohio Christian
Endeavor Union with its headquarters in Dayton. In 1946, the headquarters
  moved to Columbus.
The West Second Avenue Presbyterian Church in Columbus was the next stop
for Rev. Beatty as he was called there in 1949. This church was not new to
him since he had served part time there for over a year.
In 1951, the Covington United Presbyterian Church of Covington, Ohio
called upon his services where he stayed for 18 years and nearly became a
  permanent minister.
Carlisle became home of Rev. Beatty on July 1, 1969, after the church's
former pastor Rev. John Raskke's position had been open for a year. Rev.
Beatty was officially installed to the New Jersey Presbyterian on July 20, the
same night Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
Since Rev. Beatty's retirement, the church plans of hearing the sermons of
Rev. Zion Robbins of Cedarville, Ohio on every other Sunday in July. Rev.
Beatty will fill as minister for the next three Sundays at Silfers
  Presbyterian in Farmersville.
Rev. & Mrs. Beatty have four daughters, Mary Beatty and Helen Beatty who
live near Wellsville, Ohio, Carol Beatty who lives in Maryville, Tenn., and
Edna Beatty Palmer who is married to the Franklin High Band Director and they
reside in Hunter. The Palmers have two girls Amy and Jennifer. All four of
the Rev. Beatty's daughters attended Maryville College.
While Rev. Beatty was minster in Carlisle several of the young people of
the church won international recognition in the Youth Witness Program of
Christian Endeavor. Rev. Beatty and his wife plan to reside at Goodwin Court,
  Miamisburg.
