A. B. HAYES DEAD Expired at His Yorkville Farm About 
11:30 Last Night. HIS DEATH WAS UNEXPECTED End Only Been 
Sick  Short Time- Was One of the Best Know. Residents In 
the  County A Member of the County Board.

Abraham Bolton Hayes is dead. He passed away a't 11:30 
o'clock last night, at his farm in the town of Yorkville, 
the ailment being dropsy. The announcement of his demise 
was a shock to the entire community as his friends did 
not know he was sick. Several days ago he was prostrated 
with a local ailment that developed into dropsy and ended 
in death. Deceased was born June 11, 1838, in Patterson, 
New York, and was the youngest living child of James and 
Jane Entisel) Bolton.

When about 4 years of age lus mother died and he was 
adopted by Mr. Robert Hayes, with the understanding that 
he was not to be taken from the state of New York until 
he reached his majority. He took his foster father's 
name. He was reared in New York state, but when , years 
of age his adopted parents, contrary to expectations at 
the time of adoption, decided to try their fortunes in 
the great west. A meeting was held between the father and 
foster father of the boy and the lad decided that he 
would rather come west than remain in New York state.

The trio to Racine county was made in 1846, by way of the 
Erie canal and the great lakes, and on their arrival the 
father of the purchased a forty acre claim, unim- | 
proved, and with no habitation it. The Indians had just 
left 'he sec-| tion and the experience of frontier life 
formed a history of the family during the first years of 
their settlement. Their home was a primitive log cabin 
and wheat was the principal product. When Abraham Hayes 
was nineteen years of age his foster parent bought it for 
him 80 acres of land. By hard work he succeeded in paying 
for the farm.
Mr. Hayes prospered and has been known as one of the best 
farmers in Yorkville for many years. His farm is composed 
of nearly 400 acres and he has devoted his time the past 
few years to stock raising and the dairy business and has 
some of e very best stock in the county. For over sixteen 
years he was the secretary of the Yorkville and Mt. 
Pleasant Insurance company.

When he attained his majority Mr. Hayes became a 
Republican, but later was independent, and then became a 
Democrat and later a Populist. He has attended many 
conventions in the interests of the parties he 
represented, and i is at present a member of the Racine 
county board of supervisors, representing the town of 
Yorkville. He had been chairman of the board and served 
something like twelve or fourteen years. He also held 
other offices of trust and has been a candidate for state 
senator, but was defeat d.

In he was the secretary of the Racine and Kenosha 
Agricultural society. Socially he was a member of cae 
Union Grove Masonic lodge. For many years he was 
superintendent of poor for the middle district of the 
county and served as assessor. During his career as a 
stock raiser he has done much to improve the grades of 
stock. In January, 1861, he was married to Miss Dorothy 
Yates who was born in England.

She with seven grown children survive him. The children. 
are James B., Milwaukee; Mrs. Walter Bixby, Union Grove; 
William .B., Elizabeth B., Charles B., Robert R. and Ida, 
of Yorkville.
By his fellow townsmen Mr. Hayes is held in the highest 
regard as man of sterling worth and principles, and was 
accounted one of the leading agriculturalists of the 
community. His public and private life were above 
reproach, and all with whom business or social relations 
brought him in contact held him in high esteem.
