The Somerset Herald: (Somerset, Pa.) July 29, 1874
From the Greensburg Argus, we learn that Dr. W. H. Morrow, of Manor Station,
Westmoreland county, has in his possession a relic of no little historical interest,
and in which be takes great pride. It is a chair made in Fort Walthour, eighty-four
years ago, while Westmoreland was a howling wilderness, and in which the lamented
Gen. Arthur St. Clair was wont to seat hiself. The Fort, or Blockhouse, in question
was located on the turnpike, one mile west of Adamsburg, on the George Hays farm.
The chair was purchased by Mr. Morrow for the trifling sum of ten cents at the sale
of the property of the late Elizabeth Harold, in whose possession it had been for a
great many years. It is of antiquated appearance and is held together by wooden pins
alone, iron nails being in those days almost, if not entirely, unknown.
