The Somerset Herald: (Somerset, Pa.) 1870-1936: June 02 & 09, 1875 June 2, 1875
On Saturday morning, at an early hour, the dwelling house of George Keltz, of
Ligonier township, was burned to the ground with its entire contents, including five
hundred dollars in money. The origin of the fire is unknown, but the supposition is
it commenced in the kitchen. Two of Mr. Keltz's sons had arisen earlier than usual
for the purpose of getting breakfast as one of them wished to start for this place
to attend the centennial. After his departure the other returned to bed, but was
soon aroused by the flames, which by this time bad almost entirely enveloped the
building. The family barely escaped with their lives by jumping from the windows and
Mrs. K., in making the leap was severely injured. What makes the matter additionally
painful is the fact that Mr. K. was absent in attendance at court as a juror, where
he still is at present writing, with no hopes of being relieved until the Buena
Vista riot cases are concluded. Greensburg Argus (Source: The Somerset herald:
